Biographical notes:

By the time of his death in 1881, John Gould was the most acclaimed publisher of illustrated orinthology in Europe. Hummingbirds were his favorite species. To capture on paper the bright iridescent color of the plumage, Gould developed a special forumla of oils and color over gold leaf.
