Juliana Horatia Ewing was one of the most successful Victorian children's authors. Writing exclusively for children, she began publishing stories in her mother's magazine, Aunt Judy's Magazine, attracting a loyal following that included John Ruskin, Randolph Caldecott, and a young Rudyard Kipling. An intuitive and excellent storyteller, her sympathetic characters and unobtrusive morals made her stories wildly popular and widely admired.
