Biographical notes:

At eighteen, Winslow Sanderson moved from Massachusetts to Columbus, Ohio. His great interest in military affairs later earned him the rank of captain of the Regiment of Mounted Riflemen, a unit organized for service and the establishment of military posts along the Oregon Trail to protect emigrants moving into the Oregon Territory.
