Biographical notes:

Jacob Epstein was born on 10 November 1880 in New York. While working in a bronze foundry, he studied sculptural modelling at evening classes. In 1902, he went to Paris to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Academie Julian. He moved to London in 1905, where he settled permanently, becoming a British subject in 1911. Among his major works is a figure of Christ in bronze, made during the First World War, which was bought by Apsley Cherry-Garrard. Epstein was knighted in 1954 and died in London in August 1959.
