Kemble, an American cartoonist and caricaturist, illustrated many of the Uncle Remus stories by Joel Chandler Harris, as well as the annotated Mark Twain books, Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. He also produced numerous social satire images portraying African American characters.

Kemble was born on Jan. 18, 1861 in Sacramento, CA; was educated in New York public schools; began contributing illustrations and cartoons to magazines and weekly periodicals in 1881, including Collier's, Harper's weekly, and Scribner's; illustrated Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn in 1883, also illustrating Uncle Tom's cabin, Pudd'nhead Wilson, and Colonel Carter of Cartersville; also authored books, including Kemble's coons (1896), Comical coons (1898), and A pickaninny calendar (1900); he died on Sept. 19, 1933.
