Ernest Peixotto was an American artist, illustrator, and author known mainly for his murals and his travel literature. He married the painter Mary Hutchinson in 1897.

Peixotto is best known as a mural painter though he also achieved notable success as a writer. He served as an official artist attached to the American Expeditionary Forces during WWI, as a consultant for the 1939 World's Fair and was actively involved in art education, most significantly in connection with the Conservatoire Americain in Fontainebleau and the Beaux Arts Institute of Design.

Biography

Ernest C. Peixotto was born in San Francisco, October 15, 1869, a member of the well-known Peixotto family. He was educated in San Francisco and studied art in Paris. A painter of varied talents, he exhibited in many Paris salons and in leading American exhibitions, illustrated books and periodicals, and painted murals for many important buildings. In March 1918 he was appointed official artist attached to the A.E.F., with the rank of captain, and followed the entire American campaign. Peixotto also achieved notable success as a writer, often illustrating his own works. His books include Romantic California (1911), Our Hispanic Southwest (1916), The American Front (1919) and A Bacchic Pilgrimage (1932). He died December 6, 1940.
