Biographical notes:
Mrs. S.I.M. (Agnes Willson) Major, 1889-1966, at one time was the society editor of the Woodford Sun. Widow of Cmdr. S.I.M. Major, USN Ret., she was born in Richmond, Ky. in 1889 to Agnes Hanna and Matthew Willson. She was educated in Richmond and Shelbyville, where she graduated from Science Hill School. Samuel I.M. Major III was the son and grandson of two other S.I.M. Major's, both of Frankfort, Ky. His grandfather was a noted politician and local civic leader during the early days of Frankfort. His father was the editor and publisher of the influential KENTUCKY YEOMAN, and was also a noted local politician (mayor of Frankfort), civic leader, and entrepreneur. As an entrepreneur, S.I.M. Major, Jr., was involved in the local banking industry, a local gas utility company, and a local mule-drawn trolley car operation. However, it was as publisher of the KENTUCKY YEOMAN that he had the greatest impact. His paper was the main Southern Democratic voice in Kentucky during the Antebellum era, hitting its height with his support of John C. Breckinridge for President in 1860. During the Civil War, and later in the Reconstruction period, the YEOMAN continued to be a formidable political presence in the state. Major ceased publishing the YEOMAN in 1885, one year before his death.
