Major was a prominent figure in Frankfort's antebellum leadership. Along with other leading citizens, Major was involved in organizing the Bank of Kentucky, Farmers Bank, the Capitol Hotel, the Frankfort public school system, numerous churches, various turnpike companies, and steam boat and stagecoach lines.
