Charles Pelot Summerall (b. Mar. 4, 1867, Blount's Ferry, Fla.-d. May 14, 1955, Washington, D.C.), U.S. Army officer, graduated from West Point in 1892. Early in his career he fought in the Spanish-American War, the Philippine Insurrection, and the attack on Peking during the China Relief Expedition. He served on the front line in France during World War I as commander of the 1st Division and, later, commander of the 5th Corps. In 1926 he became chief of staff of the U.S. Army, and in 1930 retired from the Army. Beginning in 1931 he served as president of the Citadel for twenty-two years.
