George Wilkins Kendall settled in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1835. In 1837, he and Francis A. Lumsden established the Times-Picayune, a New Orleans newspaper. Kendall participated in the Texan Santa Fé Expedition in 1841 and was subsequently held prisoner in Mexico. During the Mexican War he accompanied United States forces under Zachary Taylor and Winfield Scott, reporting war news for the Times-Picayune. He was the author of Narrative of the Texan Santa Fé Expedition (1844) and The War Between the United States and Mexico Illustrated (1851). In 1852 Kendall settled in Texas, where he operated a grazing farm.
