Brown, Thomas
Rank : Captain
Regiment : United States Navy
Service :1863-1865
The Steamship Neptune, a screw-driven ship of 1,243 tons and 11 guns, was purchased by the U.S. Navy in 1863-64 and apparently placed under the command of Thomas Brown. In January 1865, the Neptune left New York Harbor for City Point, Va., and thereafter operated between various ports in Virginia, the Carolinas, Florida and Louisiana through the end of the summer, transporting mules, ambulances and other equipment. At the war's end, the Neptune assisted in transporting troops and materiel back home and in carrying cotton from Louisiana.
From the guide to the Log Book of the Steamship Neptune, Neptune, 1865, (William L. Clements Library, University of Michigan)
