Biographical notes:

Charles Clemon Deam was born in Bluffton, Indiana; he worked as a druggist and later became chief state forester in 1919. Deam published several books about grasses, trees and shrubs of Indiana.

Deam was a taxonomic botanist known for his work on trees, plants, shrubs, and flowers of Indiana. Was also state forester, 1909-1913 and 1917-1928, and state forestry researcher, 1928-1940.

Published several books on plant taxonomy of Indiana, collected herbarium specimens, and created an arboretum at his home. Also owned and operated a pharmacy in Bluffton, Indiana.
