Lothrop was an archeologist who traveled extensively in Central and Latin America. He studied the artifacts of this area and documented his research with notes and published works. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain.
