Journalist and politician John Dowling was born in Ireland and came to America in 1818. Trained as a printer, he edited newspapers in Bowling Green, Ky. and Terre Haute, Ind. Dowling served in the Indiana House of Representatives, and as a clerk for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. During and after the Civil War he edited a political newspaper in Jackson, Miss., and was the Washington correspondent for the BOSTON PILOT.
