Thomas Dowling was a politician, newspaperman, and businessman in Terre Haute. He was a newspaper publisher (1832-1845); Whig member, Indiana House of Representatives, serving six terms between 1836 and 1849; trustee, Wabash and Erie Canal (1850's); member, Terre Haute City Council (1867-1871); officer, Terre Haute Savings Bank (1869-1876); and Vigo County Commissioner (1873).
