In July 1846, John D. Wilkins of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania joined the U.S. Army as a 2nd Lieutenant under the command of General Taylor, and was ordered to join the 4th Infantry at Matamoros where he reported to Major William Graham in October 1846.
