Biographical notes:

William Lytle Carpenter served one term as mayor of Des Moines beginning in 1888. He also served as secretary of the Farmers' Protective Association which was formed in 1881 chiefly for the purpose of fighting a barbed wire monopoly by Washburn & Moen Company. The Association contracted with a "free factory" in Des Moines to manufacture barbed wire independently and sell its product to the group's members. Carpenter was the superintendent of the Des Moines free factory and one of the primary organizers of the anti-monopoly campaign.
