Orson Pratt was born on 19 September 1811 in Hartford, New York, the son of Jared and Charity Dickenson Pratt. He was an original member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in the LDS Church and held various positions therein. Pratt was also an accomplished mathematician, helping William Clayton invent another version of the modern odometer for the journey to the Salt Lake Valley, and had a strong interest in astromony. Orson Pratt died on 3 October 1881.
