Anthony Hope was a successful lawyer with literary aspirations, until chance and fortune inspired him to write The Prisoner of Zenda. The enormous popularity of this yarn inspired a host of imitators, spawned an entire genre of adventure novels, and convinced Hope to quit the bar and devote himself to writing. A master of dialogue, he produced adventure novels, light fiction, and serious novels. He was knighted for his work during World War I with the Ministry of Information.
