Biographical notes:

Rejoice Newton (1782-1868) graduated from Dartmouth College in 1807 and settled in Worcester, Mass., to practice law in partnership with William Lincoln (1801-1843). He was appointed County Attorney, Justice of the Peace, became first president of the Worcester Mutual Fire Insurance Company, served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives and Senate from 1829 to 1834, and was given several other positions in state government. Newton married Rebecca Lincoln (1792-1855) of Worcester, a sister of his law partner and Gov. Levi Lincoln (1782-1868). Their children were Hester Newton (1823-1899) and Levi Lincoln Newton (1820-1847), a Harvard graduate of 1830 who was an officer and cashier of the Worcester Bank and colonel of the Worcester militia.
