The American University of Beirut is located in Beirut, Lebanon and was built under a charter from the state of New York.
The American University of Beirut was first opened as the Syrian Protestant College in 1866 in Beirut, Lebanon, under a charter given by the state of New York. Its first original buildings were constructed and held classes starting in 1873. The name of the school was changed to American University of Beirut in 1920. Schools of medicine, pharmacy, and nursing were added in later years. The Faculty of Engineering and Architecture was established in 1951.
