Hide Profile

Bernice Livingston Youtz was born in 1926. Her father, Howard T. Livingston, and his family had been residents of San Francisco, CA for five generations. By the 1930's, the family had moved to Los Angeles, CA where Mrs. Youtz was raised. She was a resident at the International House at Berkeley from 1946-1948. She graduated from University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) about 1948. It is believed that she met her husband, Byron L. Youtz, at UC Berkeley since he earned his doctorate in physics from the University. They were married prior to 1953. Prof. Youtz was offered a position on the faculty at the American University, Beirut (U.A.B.) in 1953. The couple decided to take the 3 year contract. Mrs. Youtz taught English at the International College, which was a prep school on the U.A.B campus. Her husband, Prof. Youtz taught physics. In 1956 their contract with the U.A.B. concluded and they returned to the United States where Prof. Youtz taught at other institutions. Prof. Youtz came to The Evergreen State College (TESC) in 1970 from his position as academic vice president and professor of physics at the State University of New York's College at Old Westbury. When he came to TESC, the college hadn't been opened or the curriculum established at this point. Prof. Youtz was one of the 18 founding faculty members who designed the curriculum. Prof. Youtz was very influential in the success of TESC's national recognition, educational excellence and student acceptance. He passed away Jan. 23, 1992 in Olympia, WA. It's not clear when Mrs. Youtz quit teaching but by 1970 when the family moved to Olympia, WA she wasn't teaching. They had three children, a daughter and two sons. The three years that Mrs. Youtz and her husband spent in Beirut, Lebanon made a lasting impression on Mrs. Youtz. Since their return from Beirut, she has been involved sharing her experiences and points of view about the Israeli-Palestinian relationships through writing articles and editorials. She has participated in various organizations to help promote understanding.
