Norris, W. E. (William Edward), 1847-1925
Variant namesBiographical notes:
William Edward Norris was born in London, the son of the chief justice of Ceylon. He was educated at Eton, and accepted to the London bar, but elected not to practice law so he could concentrate on a literary career. He worked as a journalist and wrote for periodicals, publishing his first novel in 1877; his second novel was an enormous success, and he wrote steadily for the rest of his life. Considered a novelist's novelist, Norris wrote elegant, sophisticated yet accessible prose, using a variety of settings, plots, and characters.
