In 1855 he opened his own private academy, Pine Grove, which he led until 1864. In the last year of the Civil War, he enlisted as a private in the Confederate Army and he served in Capt. Chapman's Company of the Georgia Defenders. He returned to Columbus in 1865 and continued teaching. He moved to Atlanta in 1868 where he was named principal of the Crew Street School in 1872. For a brief time, 4 months in 1883, he lived in Talladega, Alabama. He returned to Atlanta in January of 1884 and remained until his death on 1 August 1892. Grafton, Charles C. (Charles Chapman), 1830-1912. Charles Chapman Grafton papers, 1848-1894.
Title:
Charles Chapman Grafton papers, 1848-1894.
These private papers of a leading High Churchman concern his ecclesiastical career before he became bishop. Most are letters to William Rollinson Whittingham. They include Grafton's decision to leave law for the Church, 1854; his studies under Whittingham, examination, and ordination, 1855; and work in Western Run Parish, Baltimore County, 1856, and in Ascension Parish, Carroll County, 1857-1858. He declines a church in Washington, D.C., because it is fashionable and he prefers to minister to the poor. He writes of his missionary work in Baltimore City and service at the Church Home and Infirmary, 1861-1864. A number of Grafton's letters from England describe travels and occupations there, 1865-1871. He reports on conditions in the Church of England, the Cowley Fathers (the Society of St. John the Evangelist), the Clewer Sisterhood, religious affairs at Oxford, his work in London at the Cholera Hospital, and his attitude toward the Roman Catholic Church. After Grafton's return to America, letters discuss Bishop John Williams's disapproval of Grafton's work in Connecticut and attempts to introduce the Cowley Fathers there, 1872. Later letters concern High Church matters and Eucharistic doctrine while Grafton was rector of the Church of the Advent, Boston, Mass., 1872-1875. There is a printed copy of one sermon, 1864, preached at the funeral of the Reverend William E. Wyatt.

Williams, J. (John), 1817-1899. John Williams papers, 1843-1880.
Title:
John Williams papers, 1843-1880.
These papers consist chiefly of intimate and wide-ranging correspondence with Bishop William Rollinson Whittingham. Only four items date before 1851, when Williams became Bishop Coadjutor of Connecticut. They praise Whittingham's sermon on the priesthood of 1843, which caused controversy in the Diocese of Maryland, and minor matters. Papers of Williams's episcopate include much material on affairs of the Diocese of Connecticut, the General Conventions, and issues confronting the Church. Much concerns relations with the Roman Catholic and Congregational Churches, and especially with the Church of England, including negotiations about Lambeth Conferences, doubts that the Church should attend the Conference of 1877, correspondence with British bishops, particularly the Bishops of Winchester and Edinburgh, questions of vesting the patriarchate in the Archbishop of Canterbury, 1874, and attitudes towards Archbishop Tait. Letters of the Reverend A. Cleveland Coxe comment on Williams's character and abilities. The Bishop's letters frequently express admiration and friendship for Whittingham, consulting him on many matters of policy and administration, such as business of the House of Bishops, efforts of the House of Clerical and Lay Deputies to reduce the authority of bishops, canons against ritual, requirements for theological studies, etc. Letters of the Civil War period support Whittingham's controversial stand for the Union in Maryland; consult him on the legality of Bishop Henry C. Lay's resignation of part of his jurisdiction, 1861; mention Bishop Thomas Atkinson's communication of 1862 as a ray of light; discuss resignation of rectors in Washington, D.C., 1862; and oppose drafting clergymen for military duty, 1865. Williams's Civil War prayers are also included. Later letters deal with expansion of the Episcopal Church in the western states, praise Bishop John B. Kerfoot, support the Freedmans' Commission, 1865-1868, and urge Whittingham to write a Pastoral Letter from the Bishops to the Episcopal Church at large, 1868. There is also material concerning the Diocese of New York, 1869; the conduct and schism of Bishop George D. Cummins, 1869-1875; Williams's controversy with Ewer, 1870; work of the Committee on Theological Studies of the House of Bishops, 1871; Williams's opposition to the Society of St. John the Evangelist (Cowley Fathers) 1871-1872; High and Low Church controversies; Williams's strenuous visitations of 1873, with ninety-seven services in ninety-one days; and affairs of the Dioceses of Illinois, Wisconsin, Fond du Lac, Kentucky, and Iowa. Substantial material concerns Williams's relations with many bishops, including Levi S. Ives, Charles C. Penick, Abram N. Littlejohn, and William C. Doane, as well as many other clergymen, among them James De Koven.

Isham, John, 1817-1892. John Isham Papers, 1855-1893.
Title:
John Isham Papers, 1855-1893.
This collection consists of six diaries written by John Isham and his wife, Maria Louisa "Lou", during the years 1878 to 1892. At the conclusion of the diaries there is one page dated February 1893, most probably written by his daughter. John Isham died on 1 August 1892. The daily entries usually begin with observations of the weather and temperature, followed by comments about daily events. In addition, Isham and his wife give a great deal of attention to the news and gossip around Atlanta. They note births, marriages, and deaths, also commenting on politics and the state of education in the city. The diaries also contain long summaries of sermons preached at Central Presbyterian Church. In addition to the diaries, the collection contains a ledger and enrollment book from the Pine Grove Academy, the private school operated by Isham in Columbus, Georgia. All of this is concluded with various transcriptions of the diaries. These incomplete transcriptions, some hand written while others have been typed, were done by Atlanta Historical Society volunteers in the 1980s.
