One of the most famous and powerful women of the 20th century, Indira Gandhi was the daughter and political heir of Jawaharlal Nehru, first Prime Minister of India. After a disruptive childhood in India and abroad, she returned to India and became politically active, and was elected Prime Minister in 1966. Her long tenure as India's leader was tumultuous, but she made steps to improve food production and industry.

Max Lerner papers, 1927-1998
Title:
Max Lerner papers 1927-1998
The papers consist of correspondence, speeches, writings, and other papers, (including research and teaching materials, photographs, memorabilia, newspaper and periodical clippings, books, and radio and television tapes) of Max Lerner, an American educator, author, lecturer, historian, and political scientist. The papers focus on Lerner's public life and career with very little material on his personal or family life. The papers document Lerner's close association with Justice Felix Frankfurter and Harold J. Laski, his controversial writings on homosexuality, his work with the Democratic Party during Adlai Stevenson's presidential campaigns, his work on behalf of Jewish causes and Zionism, and his activities during the "red scare" of the 1950s.

Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
Title:
Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
The official organ of the Communist Party, USA, the Daily Worker's editorial positions reflected the policies of the Communist Party. At the same time the paper also attempted to speak to the broad left-wing community in the United States that included labor, civil rights, and peace activists, with stories covering a wide range of events, organizations and individuals in the United States and around the world. As a daily newspaper, it covered the major stories of the twentieth century. However, the paper always placed an emphasis on radical social movements, social and economic conditions particularly in working class and minority communities, poverty, labor struggles, racial discrimination, right wing extremism with an emphasis on fascist and Nazi movements, and of course the Soviet Union and the world-wide Communist movement. The paper has had a succession of names and has been published in varying frequences between daily to weekly over the course of its existence. In 2010 it ceased print publication and became an electronic, online-only, weekly publication titled the People's World. The bulk of the collection consists of printed photographic images produced through a variety of processes, collected by the photography editors of the Daily Worker and its successor newspapers as a means of maintaining an organized collection of images for use in publication. Images of many important people, groups and events associated with the CPUSA and the American Left are present in the collection, as well as images of a wide variety of people, subjects and events not explicitly linked with the CPUSA or Left politics.

New York Times Company records. Arthur Hays Sulzberger papers, 1823-1999
Title:
New York Times Company records. Arthur Hays Sulzberger papers 1823-1999
Arthur Hays Sulzberger was the publisher of xxThe New York Timesxx from 1935 until 1961 and chairman of the board of The New York Times Company from 1961 until 1968. While he was publisher, circulation of The Times almost doubled; the editorial page developed a reputation for strong opinions; news events were subjected to more analysis and coverage of specialized topics was strengthened; new sections and departments were created for food, fashion, and women; and the overall style of the paper became less rigid and more aesthetically pleasing. The papers document Sulzberger's life and career at xxThe New York Timesxx, with the majority of the collection relating to Sulzberger's 26 years as president and publisher of the paper. Included in the collection are correspondence with family members, friends, colleagues, world leaders, and other dignitaries; memoranda regarding the business of the newspaper, including Sulzberger's notes of praise and criticism to his editors, managers, and writers; reports on his meetings with world leaders, including Winston Churchill, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Harry S. Truman; and photographs of Sulzberger, his family, business trips, vacations, and The Times' buildings.

Knoll, Florence, 1917-. Florence Knoll Bassett papers, 1932-2000.
Title:
Florence Knoll Bassett papers, 1932-2000.
The papers of architect, and interior designer and planner Florence Knoll Bassett, measure approximately 2.5 linear feet dating from 1932 to 2000. The collection selectively documents Knoll Bassett's education and her career at Knoll Associates, Inc. from the 1940s until her resignation in 1965, in addition to personal design projects and other activities after leaving the company. It is an important source of information on the development of interior architecture and design from the 1940s to the 1970s, chronicling the Knoll mission to synthesize space, furniture, and design by creating interiors based on practical use, comfort, and aesthetics. The collection documents the growth of Knoll's international reputation for its modern furnishings and interiors and the impact of a business philosophy that encompassed design excellence, technological innovation, and mass production. The material includes a chronology of Knoll Bassett's career; a portfolio of sketches, drawings and designs; photographs of Knoll Bassett and others; subject files containing sketches and photographic material; letters from friends, colleagues, clients and others; awards received by Knoll Bassett throughout her career; and printed material. Much of the material is annotated with historical and biographical notes written by Knoll Bassett which provide invaluable contextual information for the materials found therein. The notes are dated 1999 in the Container Listing, under the assumption that they were written by Florence Knoll Bassett as she was arranging her archival papers.

Higginbottom, Sam, 1874-1958,. Additional papers of Sam Higginbottom and Jane Ethelind Cody Higginbottom [manuscript] 1844-1971.
Title:
Additional papers of Sam Higginbottom and Jane Ethelind Cody Higginbottom [manuscript] 1844-1971.
The collection consists chiefly of family correspondence of Sam Higginbottom and Jane Ethelind Cody Higginbottom. In letters to each other, the Cody family, their children in school, particularly Gertrude Higginbottom Wallace and friends and fellow Presbyterian missionaries they discuss their work at the Naini Leper Asylum and the Allahabad Agricultural Institute on the Jumna Riber, Uttar Pradesh where they taught scientific agriculture and home economics. Though most of the correspondence concerns their work and daily activities, there are many references to the growing independence movement and its leaders M.K. Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Mrs. R.S. Pandit who knew and respected the Higginbottoms' work. In addition there is correspondence with the Board of Foreign missions of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S. regarding Sam's fund raising tours, with Indian students in the U.S., and with financial supporters, as well as letters and diaries of the Cody family. Many of the letters after their 1944 retirement concern the establishment of a Christian Service Training Center in Frosproof, Fla. The collection also contains many short stories by Ethel Higginbottom based on her work and a copy of her book Through teakwood windows. Of interest are a thesis on home economics in India by K.S. Pandit and issues of The Harijan, Gandhi's newspaper. Articles and pamphlets about the Higginbottoms and Presbyterian missions in Asia are among the miscellaneous materials in the collection. There are many photographs of the family and the mission including one of Buffalo Bill and one of Indira (Nehru) Gandhi visiting the institute.
