William Smith (1728-1793) was an American lawyer and historian of New York. An influential leader of the New York Presbyterian Whigs, he served as the last Royal Chief Justice of the Province of New York and Chief Justice of the Province of New York and Chief Justice of Lower Canada. His son, William Smith III (1769-1847), was a clerk of the provincial parliament, Secretary of State for the colonies, a member of the executive council, and historian of Canada. Collection consists of the papers of William Smith and his son, William Smith III. The senior Smith's papers contain correspondence and documents that chronicle the years 1770 to 1783, a period of social and political upheaval in North American history. Materials include history of New York, 1732-1762; historical memoirs, 1761-1783; New York Supreme Court register, 1750-1760; and miscellaneous papers. Papers of William Smith III contain official and personal correspondence, family documents, and items relating to lands in Canada.

William Henry Waldo Sabine (1903- ), an English-born author and editor, emigrated to the U.S. in 1947 and became interested in the local history of Queens and the American colonial and revolutionary eras. Collection consists of papers relating to Sabine's historical projects and an autobiographical manuscript. Research materials concern Sabine's studies of William Smith (1728-1793), an American jurist and Loyalist; Nathaniel Woodhull (1722-1776), an American military officer killed in the Revolutionary War; and Robert Bayard (1739-1819). Also, Sabine's manuscript describing his perception of American social customs in Queens, New York, in the 1940s and 1950s (with photographs).

Minutes of the proceedings of the Commissioners Appointed to Settle the Boundaries between the Patents of Kakiate and Cheesecocks in Orange County, New York, 1771 Jan.-1771 Sep. The commissioners were William Nicoll, George D. Ludlow, Benjamin Kissam, Thomas Hicks, and Samuel Jones. Cheesecocks was represented by William Smith, and Kakiate by William Wickham and John De Noyellis. The first meeting of the commissioners was held at Richard Bolton's tavern in New York, with later minutes held there and elswhere. Numerous witnesses examined by the commissioners are named and items of documentary evidence, along with information relevant to the dispute, is reviewed and recorded.

Correspondence and legal and business papers of Peter Van Schaack and his family. The collection includes letters to and from Egbert Benson, Henry Cruger, James Duane, William Laight, Theodore Sedgwick, Peter Silvester, John Vardill, and many others. The letters deal with such subjects as taxation, the siege of Boston, George Washington, Tories, the Jay Treaty, Shays' Rebellion, and the many prominent people with whom Van Schaack was acquainted, including the Jay family and Gouverneur Morris. There is a large number of letters to and from his brother, Henry Van Schaack (1733-1823). The correspondence contains many political and social opinions regarding America and England before, during, and after the Revolutionary War. Many of the legal documents concern the disputed claims to the Van Rensselaer properties in Claverack and Westenhook, N.Y. Henry Cruger Van Schaack added to the collection more letters from well-known people as well as legal and family papers. These are mostly dated in the mid-19th century, and deal in part with the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company, the Berkshire Iron Works, and similar business ventures. The majority of the documents are Indian and Colonial deeds, or those concerning early land disputes such as the New York-Massachusetts boundary dispute.

Correspondence, manuscripts and printed materials including the original typescript of one of his published books, "Second Sight in Daily Life" (1949), with manuscript notes by the author. There are also unpublished book manuscripts including a three-volume collection of English love poems of the seventeenth century compiled in 1951; the original typescript of a parody of Boswell's London Journal entitled "Blabwell's American Journal, 1776," (1985); and "Woodhull : a tragedy of 1776," a shortened version in the form of a story of "The Suppressed History of General Nathaniel Woodhull, President of the New York Congress and Convention in 1776," which was published in 1954. Also included is material relating to the history of the American flag; correspondence and other material on parapsychology, including his article, "A Mystery of History," published in "Light" in 1951; his correspondence with Peter Decker and with The New York Public Library on the publication of Sabine's "Historical Memoirs of William Smith," in his "Eyewitness Account of the American Revolution," series III, 1971. There are also two mimeographed versions of his playscript, "Mary Gibbons: the only play about George Washington & the beautiful girl from New Jersey." 1992-1995 Additions: 138 volumes of his diaries, 1920-1994, have been added, as well as 12 letters from W.A. Craigie concerning new entries for the Oxford English Dictionary, 1 drawing in the style of John Leech, 2 19th century drawings, the manuscript of his "Young John of Gaunt; a poem in fourteen cantos", 22 engraved American portraits, 5 maps of the American Civil and Revolutionary Wars, 3 scrapbooks, World War I to 1976, his commonplace book, 1927-1990, several of his published books, and "The Sheriff's Prisoner", an autobiographical account of his 8 months in Brixton Prison for Obscene Libel on the publication of "Guido and the Girls", along with letters and documents re. this case.

The Sparks collection consists of original and transcribed historical documents and correspondence, chiefly concerning the American colonies and the original thirteen states, collected or transcribed beginning in 1819 by Jared Sparks. The collection includes the papers of Sir Francis Bernard and George Chalmers, letters of Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, the Marquis de Lafayette, and George Washington, the journals of Thomas Ainslie, the Board of Trade, the New York Provincial Congress and Conventions, as well as the papers and records from state public offices, among many others. The Sparks collection also contains his own historical essays and compositions, published articles, letter books, diaries, account books related to his college days, professional research, and material documenting his tenure as College president.
