Born into an aristocratic Charleston family, Edward J. Pringle attended the South Carolina College in 1841 and transferred to Harvard, where he graduated with honors in 1845. He was admitted to the bar in 1847, but first decided to enjoy his wealth, and embarked on a two-year grand tour of Europe. Strong to his family business of being wealthy planters, he wrote in defense of slavery in 1857 with a work titled, "Slavery in the Southern States." Finding insufficient legal work in Charleston, he emigrated to San Francisco in 1853 to attempt a law career there. He and his wife, Cornelia Letitia Johnson had seven children. Edward died shortly after being named a commissioner to the California Supreme Court.

Primarily correspondence of the extended families of Edward J. Pringle and his wife, Cornelia C. Johnson Pringle. Edward J. Pringle materials include his letters from Harvard, 1844-1845, and journals kept during his trip to Europe during 1847-1848. Much of the family correspondence is between Cornelia Johnson Pringle and their daughter, Cornelia Covington Pringle and her six siblings: Edward J., William Bull, Sidney J., E. Covington, Hess, Mary Motte, and Charles Alston. Notable among her other correspondents are Louis Janin, Ynés Mexía, and the Cooper Ornithological Club. Also includes letters her father, Sidney Law Johnson, wrote from San Francisco in the 1860s. The papers of Charles Alston Pringle contain correspondence and manuscripts of his writings, many relating to Mexico, along with various business papers concerning his mining interests. Papers of the Pringle family also include legal documents relating to Central Pacific Railroad litigation, 1882-1890, as well as genealogical and various property records, wills, scrapbooks, and clippings.

Charles Eliot Norton papers
This archive contains letters addressed to Charles Eliot Norton from about 1845 to1908. Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. In addition he knew a great many prominent figures in both England and the United States, especially those in the political field and the literary and artistics fields. His correspondence with these people often touches upon their public and their private lives.
From 1863 to 1868 Norton was joint editor with his friend James Russell Lowell of the North American review. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review).
In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index.
Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.
