White, Newman Ivey, 1892-1948. Newman I. White papers, 1915-1948.
Title:
Newman I. White papers, 1915-1948.
Papers include correspondence, lectures, research materials, including notecards, copies of letters, manuscripts, and photographs, along with printed matter, miscellaneous writings, and other papers, with bulk dates of 1936-1948. Most of the material reflects his work on Percy Bysshe Shelley and the English Romantic poets; a small amount of reprints and lectures concerns folklore. Much of the correspondence is between White and scholars of the English poets; correspondents include T.J. Wise, Frederick L. Jones, and George L. Kittredge. Several folders of correspondence with members of the publishing firm of Alfred A. Knopf regard the publication of SHELLEY in 1940. A letter from Duke faculty member Calvin B. Hoover describes Nazi Germany in 1932, and several of White's European correspondents comment on conditions in Europe during World War II.

Price, Reynolds, 1933-2011. Reynolds Price papers, 1927-2010 and n.d. (bulk 1956-2006).
Title:
Reynolds Price papers, 1927-2010 and n.d. (bulk 1956-2006).
The papers of Reynolds Price span the years 1927-2010 with the bulk of the papers being dated between 1956 and 2006. The collection consists of correspondence; writings by Price and other authors; printed material (including serials containing articles by and about Price and his work, as well as newspaper and magazine clippings); legal and financial papers; speeches and addresses; interviews; and other material relating to Price's personal life and career as a writer and a teacher, especially at Duke University. Although the correspondence does provide insight into his career as an English professor, the collection does not contain other material, such as lecture notes, relating to the courses he taught. Extensive personal and professional correspondence between Price and his family, friends, and fellow authors provide insight into his education at Duke University (particularly his studies with Professor William Blackburn of the Department of English); his period abroad as a Rhodes scholar at Merton College, Oxford; and his literary work. Numerous American authors (many of them southern) and several British literary figures are represented in the collection. Among the major correspondents are Eudora Welty, Stephen Spender, and Alan Gurganus. Letters to and from Jeff Humphries, Josephine Humphreys, and Lee Smith are also included. Many forms of Price's writings (drafts, proofs with notes, outlines) document the development of his fiction, poetry, plays, and other literary works. Some manuscripts sent to Price by students and by other authors have notations and criticism by Price. There are 141 electronic documents that have been migrated to the Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections server. A disk directories log is filed with the finding aid in the repository. Addition (2007-0009) (4850 items; 10.5 lin. ft.) (dated 2003-2006) primarily consists of typescripts, drafts, and proofs for THE GOOD PRIEST'S SON, LETTER TO A GODCHILD, A SERIOUS WAY OF WONDERING, and the screenplay for A LONG AND HAPPY LIFE. Also included is correspondence, personal documents, photographs, bookcovers, and printed materials by other authors. Addition (2009-0105) (12 items; 0.6 lin. ft.) consists largely of books from Price's writing, teaching, and research, including some text books as well as novels with his notes in the margins. Also included is one folder of miscellaneous notes and correspondence, 1972-1994. Addition (2011-0013) (9000 items; 12.0 lin. ft.): The majority of this addition consists of drafts, revisions, additions, and other materials from writing and publication of ARDENT SPIRITS. Other writings and drafts in this addition include A LONG AND HAPPY LIFE, LETTER TO A GODCHILD, and CLEAR PICTURES. The remainder of the addition is sorted into teaching materials, events, correspondence, and miscellaneous material, including photographs, newspaper clippings, and a disassembled scrapbook. Addition (2011-0080) (20,000 items; 31.5 lin. ft.) includes writings, correspondence teaching materials, family scrapbooks and albums, personal snapshots, portraits, and other ephemera from Price's home. Includes drafts of ARDENT SPIRITS as well as some short stories and poems. Also includes books from Price's library, several with inscriptions or notes.

Roberts, Dorothy Elaine. Dorothy E. Roberts Papers, 1903-1993.
Title:
Dorothy E. Roberts Papers, 1903-1993.
The collection largely consists of material compiled by Roberts, who functioned as historian of the Dept. of English. Of note are the various lists of faculty, Ph.D. candidates and staff of the department over a number of years. Also included are files she maintained on faculty members, which include correspondence and clippings as well as a file Roberts kept on herself regarding her career at Duke. She also provides her impressions of key departmental staff, namely the chairmen she worked for. In 1982, Roberts donated 14 letters between her and Guy Davenport, a Duke alumnus, regarding Paris and other European cities as well of Davenport's appreciation of James Joyce and Roberts' own love of traveling abroad. Roberts' friendship with Reynolds Price is represented in the collection. There are several folders on him which include correspondence, Christmas cards, photographs, clippings, and an envelope which holds locks of Price's hair. Of particular note is a sketch Price drew of Emily Dickinson that he gave to Roberts. There is also a caricature of Ph.D. candidates, including Price, from 1962.

Chappell, Fred, 1936-. Fred Chappell papers, 1944-2010 and undated.
Title:
Fred Chappell papers, 1944-2010 and undated.
The fully processed portion of the Fred Chappell Papers spans the dates 1960-1997, with the bulk being dated after 1970. The collection consists of correspondence; writings by Chappell and other authors; printed material (primarily serials containing stories, poems, and articles by Chappell but also clippings); legal and financial papers; speeches and addresses; interviews; and other material. Documents relate to Chappell's personal life and career, both as a student and writer at Duke University, where he studied under well-known creative writing teacher William Blackburn, and as a writer and professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNC-G). The collection documents the entire length and breadth of Chappell's multifaceted career. Beginning with the years just after he completed his undergraduate studies at Duke and began his first novel at the urging of Hiram Haydn, an editor to whom Blackburn had introduced him, the letters, manuscripts, and notebooks provide insight into Chappell's developing literary career, his academic activities at UNC-G, and his growing involvement with a large network of writers, including a number of his former students. Many prominent American authors, especially Southern ones, are represented in the collection. Among the most frequent correspondents are Kelly Cherry, Grace DiSanto, George Garrett, Marianne Gingher, Dana Gioia, Donald Hall, Heather Ross Miller, Robert Morgan, Eve Shelnutt, and Dabney Stuart. Notebooks, manuscripts, typescripts, proofs, and printed material document the development of Chappell's career across all the genres in which he writes. Addition (93-102) (1000 items; 3.0 linear feet; 1992-1993) has been incorporated into the fully processed portion of the collection. The remaining two boxes consist primarily of incoming correspondence. A small portion of this includes enclosures and attachments, some of which are writings by other authors. Addition (98-299) (1694 items; 14 linear feet; 1989-1998, bulk 1997-1998) comprises correspondence received by Chappell. It also includes several folders of outgoing correspondence, drafts and published versions of works by Chappell and others, nineteen books, awards, miscellaneous printed materials, and one audio cassette and video cassette. Addition (99-272) (7200 items; 12 linear feet; ca. 1978-1999) comprises correspondence, drafts and published versions of works by Chappell and others, photographs, clippings, awards, one videocassette, and other items. Addition (00-272) (5425 items; 13.7 linear feet; 1989-2000) comprises correspondence received by Chappell; drafts and published versions of works by Chappell and others; reviews; items relating to his teaching; thirty-three books and periodicals; and other related materials further documenting his work as a poet, novelist and teacher. The addition includes two compact disks and four videocassettes. Addition (01-145) (4344 items, 7.70 linear feet; dated 2000-2001 and n.d.) comprises correspondence received by Chappell; drafts and published versions of works by Chappell and others; reviews; items relating to his teaching; 33 books and periodicals; and other related materials further documenting his work as a poet, novelist and teacher. The addition includes 2 compact disks and 4 videocassettes. Addition (02-171) (4895 items, 8.9 lin. ft.; dated 1944-2002 and n.d., bulk 1995-2002) consists primarily of incoming correspondence (1995-2002). Also includes Chappell's outgoing correspondence (1999-2002); drafts of his writing; newspaper and journal articles and reviews by and about Chappell; his Duke University diplomas (1961; 1964); the North Carolina Award in Literature (1980); 13 black-and-white and 3 color photographs; 7 audio cassettes; 1 audio CD; and 1 Betamax and 3 VHS videocassettes. The audio and videocassettes include recordings of Chappell with George Garrett, as well as of Chappell reading. Title:
Clarence Louis Frank Gohdes Papers, 1905-1990s and undated.
Collection consists of research materials, correspondence, writings, clippings and other printed materials, and a few photographs, mainly from the latter half of Gohdes's career. The earliest date (1811) refers to reproductions of original materials used in his research. Correspondence with other American Literature teachers and authors, combined with other materials relating to Gohdes's institutional and organizational affiliations, in particular with Duke University, the Modern Language Association (MLA), and AMERICAN LITERATURE, comprise the most substantive aspects of this collection. They provide insight into the bureaucratic and institutional exigencies of American literary scholarship in the mid-twentieth century. Major authors and scholars of the time wrote to Gohdes, and include Alexander Blackburn, Oscar Cargill, Lewis Chase, Robert Elias, Norman Foerster, Arthur Rubin, Arthur Quinn, and Upton Sinclair. Original manuscripts by Gohdes, inscribed reprints of writings by his colleagues, and materials relating to many major British and American literary figures, make up the rest of the collection. There is substantial material on Edgar Allen Poe. The collection also includes papers documenting his research and writing for his last book project, a cultural and horticultural history of the muscadine grape entitled SCUPPERNONG, NORTH CAROLINA'S GRAPE AND ITS WINES.
