Born in Abilene, Texas, Arlin Turner received his B.A. from West Texas State University in 1927 and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Texas in 1930 and 1934, respectively. He joined the English Department at Duke University in 1953 and served until 1979. He was department chair from 1958-1964. Turner specialized in American literature, writing on Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mark Twain and other Southern humorists.
