The Edward Avery McIlhenny Papers consist of business, scientific, and personal correspondence documenting Edward Avery McIlhenny's involvement with numerous state and national organizations, as well as his achievements in ornithology, zoology, botany, and related fields between 1911 and 1947. One box of photographs depict whale hunting, ducks, and other birds. The papers also include approximately 30 notebooks of bird banding records, between 4,000 and 5,000 bird banding return cards, issues of bird banding magazines, and approximately 40 envelopes containing bands, all covering the years 1916-1947.

One volume contains a single November 3, 1927 notarial act passed before Rudolph J. Weinmann, notary of Orleans Parish, and consisting of two hundred fifty canceled bonds, in denominations of five hundred and one thousand dollars, issued by the Bank of Lafayette & Trust Company, for Jungle Gardens, Inc. Also included is the September 29, 1927, resolution of the Board of Directors for Jungle Gardens, Inc., authorizing E. A. McIlhenny and J. C. Barry to execute the bond cancellation.

Robert Ray Cox conducted this interview and others as part of his thesis research on William Weeks Hall and the gardens of the Shadows-on-the-Teche plantation in New Iberia, Louisiana. In this interview, Steele Burden describes his relationship with William Weeks Hall, the great-grandson of David Weeks, the builder of the Shadows. He speaks about Mr. Hall's personality and involvement in preserving the house and gardens. He also recollects the features of the gardens and outdoor spaces, the types of plants used, and the location of certain trees and plants on the grounds.
