Typescript of Samuel Cosmo (Catawba) Lowry's diary with accounts of campaigns in lowcountry South Carolina; Wilmington, N.C.; second battle of Manassas, and Petersburg, Va.; also includes descriptions of music provided by Negro slaves, hunting, fishing, and other diversions of camp life; troop movements throughout the lowcountry, including Wadmalaw and John's Island; return to South Carolina to recover from injury; enrollment at Arsenal Academy in Columbia, S.C., in 1863; and return to Confederate service in 1864. Collection also includes roll of Lowry's company, ca. 7 May 1864; poetry; and literary compostitions, including essays, "The Right of the South to Secede from the North"; "Are We Rebels?"; and "Eulogy on Gen. Stonewall Jackson, S.C.V." Diary transcribed by Sumter Leon Lowry.

Galphin family. Galphin family papers, 1737-1952

Title: Galphin family papers, 1737-1952

Collection focuses chiefly on legal and economic issues resulting from the 1850 resolution of the "Galphin claim" which was originally presented, 6 June 1775, by George Galphin (ca. 1710-1780), to Governor James Wright (1716-1785), at Savannah, Georgia, for money owed him by the British Crown dating from a 1773 treaty with area Indians of the Creek and Cherokee Nations. After the Revolution the claim was pressed against the American government . Land papers and legal documents (plats, bonds, conveyances, mortgages, deeds, receipts, agreements, promissory notes, wills, and documents relinquishing rights of dowry; an undated circular re a subscription to The People's Literary Companion [ca.1880s?]; a widow's pension, 1879, to Ann H. Galphin (1822-1899) for the military service of her husband [Dr. John] Milledge Galphin (1794-1857) in the War of 1812. Poems and personal letters, including a letter containing advice from [Dr. Thomas Sumter Mills (1783-1832)] to his children, recorded Oct. 1832 from his deathbed by his daughter, Ann Helen Mills Poag (b. 1822), telling them that, "I am... going to leave you in a troublesome world" and encouraging them to "meet you all again in Heaven . . ." Handwritten discharge from Confederate Army service, 29 Mar. 1863, from the First South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry, Company C, recipient S.S. Galphin; and a Civil War poem titled "Fall of Vicksburg," written July 1863, by [Samuel] Catawba Lowry (1845-1864) while at the Arsenal Academy (Columbia, S.C.) Last will and testament of George Galphin (1893 copy); and an agreement, 12 Jan. 1952, with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission for the purchase of land for the Savannah River Operations.

Collection contains a bound typescript transcription of Samuel C. Lowry's recollections and diaries, and transcriptions of other writings by Lowry including essays and poetry; and loose photocopies of Part I of his handwritten recollections. Recollections and diaries (1861-1864) pertain to Civil War battles, marches, and other military operations in which Samuel C. Lowry participated as a member of the 17th regiment of the South Carolina Volunteers. The documents provide detailed accounts about Lowry's comrades and camp servants (slaves), soldiers' daily activities, hunting and fishing, and nearby civilian conditions. Recollections and diaries include a roster of Company F and information on the activities of Lowry's units at Charleston (S.C.), Seabrook Island (S.C.), Kiawah Island (S.C.), Johns Island (S.C.), Wadmalaw Island (S.C.), and other islands; in Virginia (1862-1863); at the Battles of Malvern Hill and Second Manassas. Additional accounts concern Lowry's service (1864) on Sullivan's Island (S.C.), at Fort Sumter (S.C.) - including accounts of blockade running near Wilmington (N.C.) and Petersburg (Va.). Lowry's other writings include an essay (1864) on secession, a eulogy of Stonewall Jackson, poems, and lyrics of a song. Transcriptions include explanatory notes by Willie M. Lowry (Mrs. Sumpter L. Lowry).
