Samuel Catawba Lowry papers, 1861-ca. 1975.

Collection contains a bound typescript transcription of Samuel C. Lowry's recollections and diaries, and transcriptions of other writings by Lowry including essays and poetry; and loose photocopies of Part I of his handwritten recollections. Recollections and diaries (1861-1864) pertain to Civil War battles, marches, and other military operations in which Samuel C. Lowry participated as a member of the 17th regiment of the South Carolina Volunteers. The documents provide detailed accounts about Lowry's comrades and camp servants (slaves), soldiers' daily activities, hunting and fishing, and nearby civilian conditions. Recollections and diaries include a roster of Company F and information on the activities of Lowry's units at Charleston (S.C.), Seabrook Island (S.C.), Kiawah Island (S.C.), Johns Island (S.C.), Wadmalaw Island (S.C.), and other islands; in Virginia (1862-1863); at the Battles of Malvern Hill and Second Manassas. Additional accounts concern Lowry's service (1864) on Sullivan's Island (S.C.), at Fort Sumter (S.C.) - including accounts of blockade running near Wilmington (N.C.) and Petersburg (Va.). Lowry's other writings include an essay (1864) on secession, a eulogy of Stonewall Jackson, poems, and lyrics of a song. Transcriptions include explanatory notes by Willie M. Lowry (Mrs. Sumpter L. Lowry).
