Landscape architect.
Historical Note
Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903), known as the "father of American landscape architecture," designed and planned parks and park systems throughout the United States. His earliest designs, completed with partner Calvert Vaux, include New York's Central Park, Brooklyn's Prospect Park, and Chicago's South Parks.
Olmsted's stepson and son, John Charles Olmsted and Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. became landscape architects as well, working in Olmsted's firm. The two formed the Olmsted Brothers firm in 1898, after the retirement of Frederick Law Olmsted, Sr. and the death of partner Charles Eliot. The Olmsted Brothers completed numerous large projects, including comprehensive park systems, universities, exposition grounds, libraries, hospitals, and state capitols. In addition, the two were among the founding members of the American Society of Landscape Architects.

Title:
George Dudley Seymour papers, 1684-1944 (inclusive).
The papers consist of correspondence, writings, photographs, research files, printed material, and miscellanea of George Dudley Seymour, a lawyer, antiquarian, historian, author and city planner in New Haven, Connecticut. Seymour's personal papers and collected manuscripts document the history of the Seymour family, the patriot Nathan Hale, the city planning movement in New Haven, Connecticut, and local history, 1684-1944. General correspondence files contain the bulk of personal correspondence, with many figures from the fields of art, education, politics, and sculpture represented, including William Howard Taft, a close friend of Seymour's. Family genealogy files include extensive correspondence, papers, and photographs Seymour accumulated in the course of his research on The Seymour Family (1939). Seymour also collected information and manuscripts relating to Nathan Hale, the Connecticut hero. As a pioneer in New Haven's early city planning movement, Seymour amassed correspondence with such notable figures as Cass Gilbert and Frederick Law Olmstead, minutes of commission meetings, and clipping files which detail much of the city planning activity engaged in during the early 1900s. Topical files and scrapbooks document a wide range of literary and professional activities, including Seymour's writings on New Haven and Connecticut history, and his legal practice in patent law.

Charles Eliot Norton papers
Title:
Charles Eliot Norton papers
This archive contains letters addressed to Charles Eliot Norton from about 1845 to1908. Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. In addition he knew a great many prominent figures in both England and the United States, especially those in the political field and the literary and artistics fields. His correspondence with these people often touches upon their public and their private lives. From 1863 to 1868 Norton was joint editor with his friend James Russell Lowell of the North American review. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.
