The Vermont Marble Co. Collection is made up of the records of the company's general store in West Rutland, Vt., that was operated by John N. Baxter and the Rutland Marble Co. before becoming part of the Vermont Marble Co. The collection also includes papers of companies that were affiliated with or became part of the Vermont Marble Company including the Freeman Stone Co., the Sheldon Marble Co., the Sutherland Falls Marble Co., the Pocohabajac Marble Co., Monumental Marble Co., Albertson Marble Co., Brandon Italian Marble Co., Consumers Marble Co., and the Producers' Marble Co., and a few papers of the West Rutland Trust Co. The collection includes bills and receipts, correspondence, legal papers, photographs and printed trade material.

The Director's Office records 1955-1977 are comprised almost entirely of business correspondence between the Director of the museum and other people and institutions though other records, such as receipts and publications, are occasionally present. During this nascent phase of the museum the Director's Office handled almost all aspects of business and consequently these files reflect a wide spectrum of museum concerns including publicity, acquisitions, finances, staff hiring, construction, and expansion of the museum. Some files are devoted to individuals and institutions while others are labelled with subjects such as Inquiries, Acquisitions, and Employment. The subject headings and content of the materials remains quite consistent throughout the years, even through the tenures of different Directors.

Edwin Olsen was an architect in the Office of John Russell Pope during design and construction of the West Building of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. Olsen described his work on the National Archives building, also designed by John Russell Pope, followed by his assignments relating to the National Gallery building. He outlined the stages in design of the National Gallery building and explained the importance of model-making as part of the process. He recalled the meeting at which the Gallery's skylights and laylights were approved, and described the controversy relating to the design of the rotunda dome.He explained the work of the Vermont Marble Company in forming the rotunda columns from blocks of Italian marble. He described Alexander Reed's role in building construction. Olsen also recounted Jacqueline Kennedy's efforts to reinstall a fireplace in the White House state dining room, and his visit to former President Harry Truman in Independence, Missouri as part of this effort.

Photograph album comprised pimarily of family pictures of members of both the Robinson family and the related Fiske and Shiland families. This album documents the family of Asher Corse Robinson (1839-1911), particularly his granchildren, in the period, ca. 1906-1912. Numerous photographs of his young grandchildren, Charlene Shiland (b. 1905), Donald Shiland (1908-1972), Mortimer C. Robison, Jr., (1900-1980), Robert F. Robinson (b. ca. 1906), Clifton Robison (1901-1976) and Winfield Robinson (b. 1902) dominate the album. Charlene's mother, Bertha Robinson Shiland (b. 1869) or "Aunt Bertha" also appears in several group photographs as do Asher Robinson's other children, including, Fannie Robinson Fiske (b. ca. 1875), Adelle Robinson Fiske (b. 1863) and her husband, Burton Colburn Fiske (1863-1942), and Mortimer C. Robinson, Jr. ("Uncle Mort") and his wife ("Aunt Nell"). However, the emphasis of almost all the pictures is on Asher Robinson's young grandchildren. There is one portrait of Asher Robinson in 1907 included. Other photographs include landscapes and buildings, particularly of Asher Robinson's farm in Westford, Vermont, and the nearby Cloverdale Creamery. Several photographs of Marble Island in Alaska were taken by Asher Robinson's eldest son, George C. Robinson (1860-1925), in 1909 and are included in the back of the album with a possible image of the Vermont Marble Company provided for comparion. Several of the photographs may also have been taken in Michigan or in Worcester, Mass., where some of Asher Robinson's children settled. However, most of the images appear to have been taken on visits to the Robinson farm in Westford, Vermont.

The Proctoriana Collection, created by Otto T. Johnson, is made up of research notes and publications Johnson used in the writing of a history of Proctor, Vt. There are notes and documents Johnson used to describe the activities of early settlers and trace the ownership of key properties in town, especially the marble quarries. There are lists and descriptions of some of the first marble companies and general histories of the industry written by Johnson, Fred Patch, and J.E. Manley. Johnson collected publications of Proctor organizations. The most extensive collection is from the Vermont Marble Company and includes Vermont Marble, 1925-1927; The Memory Stone, 1927-1954; and Marble Chips, 1937-1967; and trade catalogs, and some personnel material. Other publications include the high school newspaper known as the Spotlight and the Sutherland, 1916-1956; the yearbook, Proctorian, 1840-1957 (some skips); the Union Church Yearbook, 1909-1963; the town of Proctor annual reports, 1888-1963; and a few years of the YMCA yearbook, 1903-1915. There are scrapbooks of clippings about Proctor, 1890-1952, and an extensive collection of images of Proctor including negatives, glass plate negatives, and prints.

Title: Vermont Marble Company treasurer's records, 1849-1940 (bulk 1866-1884).

The Vermont Marble Company Treasurer's Records are the business records kept by Adolphus Smedberg of the Rutland Marble Company and it's successor, the Vermont Marble Company. The collection includes correspondence, financial statements, bills and receipts and contracts, agreement and other legal papers, 1866-1884. Smedberg worked in the company's New York City office and much of the correspondence is on letterhead of the Rutland Marble Co., and Baxter Manufacturing Co., and is reports from the Rutland and Salem, N.Y. quarry managers. Repeat correspondents include John N. Baxter, J.B. Holley, Charles A. Frost, B.F. Woodruff, John D. Allan, N.P. Simon, H.H. Love, C. Clark, Charles L. Sanford, E.F. Dana, William W. Clark, and J. Clark. There are also letters from Redfield Proctor, first as manager of the Sutherland Falls Marble Co., and then as manager of the Rutland Marble Co. planning the creation of the Vermont Marble Co. A major project of the Vermont Marble Company was providing the marble for the Indiana State House, 1880-1884, and the correspondence and notes on specifications and estimates are included in this collection.
