The Vermont Marble Company was created in 1881 as a result of the merger of the Sutherland Falls Marble Co. and the Rutland Marble Co. The Rutland Marble Co. had been incorporated in New York City and included quarries in West Rutland, Center Rutland, and Salem, N.Y. Bain was born in Canada and educated at McGill (B. Sc., 1921; M. Sc., 1923) and Columbia (M.A., 1923; Ph. D., 1927) Universities. He taught at Amherst College, 1926-1966, in geology and minerology. Bain was a consulting geologist to the Vermont Marble Company, as well as in the State Geological Survey of Vermont, Canadian Geological Survey, McIntyre Porcupine Mines and Phelps Dodge Corporation.
