The volume is Captain Todd's field diary kept during General Selby Harney's punitive expedition against the Dakota Indians in 1855. It contains several detailed sketches of the route from Fort Leavenworth to the Black Hills, including the topography of the Battle of Ash Hollow (Sept. 3), and describes buffalo herds, military life, Black Hills scenery, and Todd's trip to Sioux City, Iowa. The photographs and filmstrip document a copy made by Todd of the notes of Captain Stewart Van Vliet on a journey between forts Laramie and Pierre (Aug. 1849), including detailed maps of the route.

Ships' logs for the Atlantic and the McClellan with additional notes, clippings relating to the McClellan and other ships, and attached letters and copies of letters to Alfred G. Gray. The volume records a cruise of the Atlantic (p. 1-5) which left New York (N.Y.) on April 6, 1861 and proceeded to Key West (Fla.), Pensacola (Fla.), and Havana (Cuba) before returning to New York on May 1, 1861. The ship transported ammunition, horses, men, and government stores. Includes lists of officers and soldiers from various units. The McClellan completed 21 cruises from New York between 8 September 1861 and 18 July 1864. Several cruises include stops at Hilton Head Island (S.C.), Beaufort (S.C.), Port Royal (S.C.), Fort Pickens (S.C.), Fort Monroe (Va.), Alexandria (Va.), and Washington (D.C.); and ventures into the Potomac, Mississippi, and Cooper rivers. In April 1862 Gray left the ship in command of Captain Boot while he sailed the ship Atlantic to New York. The log notes several naval actions, the capture and disposal of the blockade runners Clotilda and Laura Dudley, and the protection of the Quartermaster's office during the 1863 draft riots in New York. Correspondents include John Pope, S.F. DuPont, J.C. Clapp, Stewart Van Vliet, and N.P. Banks.
