Title:
Robert Steck Photographs 1937-1996
Robert Steck (1912-), actor and social activist, sailed to Europe to volunteer for service in the Spanish Civil War with the Abraham Lincoln Brigade in January 1937. In the following months, Steck served in the International Brigades with the First Regiment de Tren, where he was made political commissar; worked with British writer Ralph Bates, putting out the magazine Volunteer for Liberty; headed the Tarazona Base Cultural Commission, adapting his theater experience to the political and social realities of the war and creating skits performed off the back of trucks (known as "Buffoons on Trucks"); and was rifleman, runner and battalion scout for the Third Lincoln company. This collection includes images acquired by Steck in the course of his service in Spain and images of Steck, and others, from before and after the Spanish Civil War. The collection contains non-combat photographs of the members of the First Regiment de Tren, images of Carl Geiser in Spain after the Civil War and of Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade in a solidarity parade held in the United States and one image of the "Night of Stars," a New York City benefit for the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. The collection also includes portraits of Steck, images of Steck with his public school pupils and one image of Steck attending a picket and rally in Puerto Rico.

Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade: Complaints of Discrimination during World War II, 1941-1946
Title:
Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade: Complaints of Discrimination during World War II 1941-1946
During World War II nearly 500 Abraham Lincoln Brigade veterans enlisted in the U.S. armed forces. Many served with distinction, were decorated and were cited for heroism. Some found, however, that their time in Spain battling Franco’s insurgent forces seemed to compromise their status in the U.S. military. This collection consists of World War II letters from more than 70 volunteers to the Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade headquarters in New York City, some of them documenting discrimination against Lincoln Brigade veterans by the U.S. military. Also included are files of letters from Jack Bjoze, the Executive Secretary of VALB, to U.S. military officials, government officials, and newspaper columnists seeking to expose and end an apparent policy that prohibited some veterans from promotion or from participating in active service; and files documenting cases that VALB regarded as the main instances of discrimination.

Robert served as first commander of the Lincolns and rose to the rank of chief of staff of the 15th International Brigade. Marion served the Brigade as a volunteer in several capacities. In November 1937, Marion returned to the United States to raise money for war by making speeches at rallies across the country. Robert disappeared during an ambush at Corbera (Ebro Valley) and his body was never found. Marion became active in the Bay Area Chapter of Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade (VALB). Later in her life, she co-wrote with journalist Warren Lerude. Robert Jordan, the main character in For Whom the Bell Tolls – Ernest Hemingway’s Spanish Civil War novel – was apparently modeled after Robert Merriman. African Americans in the Spanish Civil War: Christopher Brooks Research Files 1930-1994
Christopher Brooks was a graduate student at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, who in 1993 began research on a thesis project chronicling African Americans who fought on the side of the Republican government in the Spanish Civil War. As part of that research, he sent out survey forms, along with a request for any additional information, to other surviving volunteers of that struggle who had fought in either American, British or Canadian brigades. He hoped that their memories of specific African-American fighters, including their military and political histories and any other personal details, would add greater depth to the portraits already published in the volume, edited by Danny Duncan Collum and researched by Victor Berch, entitled (G.K. Hall and Co., 1992). This collection consists of descriptive material on the project and responses from the veterans (and spouses) who replied. Guide to the Edward K. Barsky Papers, 1936-1970
Edward K. Barsky (1897-1975) was a prominent physician who led a group of American medical volunteers in Spain during the Civil War. After the war, he served as Chairman of the Joint Anti-Fascist Refugee Committee (JAFRC), an organization dedicated to aiding Spanish refugees and lobbying the U.S. leadership on behalf of the deposed Republican government. Barsky and the entire board of JAFRC were charged with contempt of Congress and convicted in June 1947 for refusing to turn over the group’s records. Barsky was sentenced to six months in prison. Following his release the New York Board of Regents moved to suspend his medical license, a decision that was upheld by the Supreme Court in 1954. These papers reflect Barsky’s humanitarian work on behalf of Spain and document the court cases that stemmed from these progressive activities.

Title:
Marjorie Polon Papers Bulk, 1938 1938-1952, (Bulk 1938)
The Marjorie Polon Papers consist chiefly of letters from six American Abraham Lincoln Brigade volunteers (Bill "Mike" Bailey, Nathan Gross, Harry Hakam, George Kaye, Sydney Levine and William Van Felix) who fought together in the Spanish Civil War. Although Polon's correspondents were strangers to her, the letters she wrote were clearly important to the men who received them and several of them responded in detail to her. The bulk of the letters were written in 1938 and provide descriptions of battles, bombardments, and the relationship between the international volunteers and the Spanish citizenry as well as commentary on the political situation in the United States.

Title:
Guide to the Frances Patai Papers, 1937-1998
Frances Patai was an educator, writer, historian and feminist activist. Born in New York in 1930 she earned her bachelors and masters degrees at the City College of New York in the 1950s and taught English and communication courses throughout the City University of New York (CUNY) system. Throughout her career Patai was concerned with the rights and status of women, and in the last decade of her life she devoted her efforts to researching and writing a book on women medical personnel who volunteered during the Spanish Civil War. Patai died in 1998 before she could bring her project to fruition. She was 67 years old. The Patai Papers consist predominantly of research materials she gathered and drafts she produced during the course of her work on her unpublished book, Heroines of the Good Fight: U.S. Women Volunteers in the Spanish Civil War including articles, clippings, and notes.
