Diaries kept on the expedition commanded by the U.S. Topographical Engineers, Captain Howard Stansbury and Lieutenant John Williams Gunnison, sent to survey the Great Salt Lake and adjacent valleys. The Stansbury and Gunnison diaries (9 v.) describe the journey to and from Fort Leavenworth and life among the Mormons, as well as the actual surveys, April 24, 1849-October 1, 1850. With these is the diary of Albert Carrington, a Utah settler hired as scientific assistant, April 3-December 24, 1850; and that of an artist, John Hudson, who served during the actual survey of the lake, April 3-June 28, 1850.

The papers document the military career of a topographical engineer in the nineteenth century. The collection contains correspondence, reports, maps, and data from astronomical observations created during the surveys of the Northeastern and Mexican boundaries, a review of the Mason-Dixon Line, a project to improve the Great Lakes's harbors, and a survey of the North and North West Lakes. The papers also have information on Graham's personal life as well as family members such as his son, William Montrose Graham.

The collection consists of letters, manuscripts (including 9 journals and 2 sketch books), and photographs arranged in three separate groups. The first group of papers concern Gunnison himself: his journal kept in Florida and Georgia in 1840, information about Wisconsin Territory (1841), the Stansbury Expedition (1849-50), life among the Mormons, the expedition that Gunnison led from St. Louis to Utah (1853), and the official communications related to his death. The second group contains letters written by his wife's family in the South during the Civil War and also some Bunnison and Briard family materials. The third group concerns his nephew, Charles Andrew Gunnison, who traveled in Europe and Japan with San Francisco area businessman Timothy Hopkins.

Livingston, during the expedition of the 3rd Artillery to California, describing his departure from New York, the march from Fort Leavenworth through Kansas, Nebraska, and Utah, and encampment in Salt Lake City. Livingston discusses his opinions on Army operations in Indian Territory, relates news of the deaths of Lieutenant John L. Grattan and his command at Fort Laramie, and describes buffalo hunting, the effects of cholera, and other incidents of the march. In letters written from winter encampment in Salt Lake City, Livingston discusses the Army's plans to avenge the death of Captain J. W. Gunnison at the hands of Mormons and American Indians, and he describes his impressions of Salt Lake City, Mormonism, and relations between Mormons and United States soldiers. The letters are bound with typed transcriptions; accompanied by a carte-de-visite photograph in case of Livingston. Laid in is a clipping from Army and Navy Journal, undated, of an obituary for Livingston, written by Colonel Horatio G. Gibson.

Contemporary copies of letters regarding a ring belonging to Richard H. Kern, which was recovered in the aftermath of the Gunnison Massacre. In the first letter from Brigham Young to Edward Griffin Beckwith and Robert Murray Morris, Young writes that Indian agent Major S.B. Rose had just returned from Fillmore City, where he acquired from the Pauvan Indians a U.S. Rifle, "one finger ring, marked with K. and having a bloodstone," and part of a brass odometer. Young continues that he is sending the items on to Beckwith and Morris via interpreter D.B. Huntington (1854). The second letter is from James Hervey Simpson to Young, inquiring after the whereabouts of the ring recovered by George W. Bean and that if no one had done so he would like to return it to Kern's family (1858). The final letter is from Young to Simpson telling him that he had already sent the ring to Beckwith and Morris (1859).

Journal kept by Brevet Captain R. M. Morris from 1849 to 1853, with gaps, documenting a journey from Fort Leavenworth to San Francisco from June to November, 1849, his career in the West and Great Plains through to his account of the Gunnison massacre in Utah in 1853. The journal begins March 25, 1849, when Morris received orders to travel from Washington, D.C. to Fort Leavenworth, where he describes daily camp life, a cholera outbreak, and preparations for the journey west. Approximately 80 pages describe the journey to San Francisco made while serving as head of the escort to General John Wilson, Principal Indian Agent. Morris records events such as cholera outbreaks, encounters with Indians, stampedes, buffalo hunting, teamsters deserting, General Wilson's dismissal of his escort, and soldiers deserting upon reaching the gold fields. Morris includes a transcript of the journal of Lt. J. M. Haynes, kept on the road to California while Morris made a sidetrip to Fort Hall, Idaho to procure more mules and oxen. There is a gap in the journal from November, 1849 until March, 1850. Morris became Acting Assistant Adjutant General at Benicia, recording daily activities and several trips to Oregon City, one of them for a meeting with Governor Joseph Lane, and another trip to The Dalles, Oregon as part of an Army inquiry. The journal then has a 1 1/2 year gap, picking up in February 12, 1852, at which time Morris, back in Washington, D.C., was ordered out to Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. There he helped command a march along the Arkansas River, up to Bent's Fort and Fort Laramie. The journal picks up again October 24th, 1853, describing the events surrounding the Gunnison massacre, his arrival on the scene of the massacre the same night, his trip to Fillmore and discussions there with Mormon leaders about the attack. The journal ends November 4, 1853. At the back of the volume there are fair copies of nine letters relating to his dispute with General Wilson in 1849.

His journals that he kept during his service in California and letters to his wife recount his life in the West, including details of death of John William Gunnison and his encounters with Mormons. The collection also contains letters of John Laurence Fox to his parents, wife, and son written between 1837 and 1864. Included are letters dealing with the Exploring Expedition, the mission to the Mediterranean, slave trade in West Africa, Matthew C. Perry's mission to Japan, foreign intervention in China, Taiping Rebellion, and the Civil War. This portion of the collection also contains his surgeon's commission (1847), and newspapers clippings related to the death of Charles Eben Fox.
