John Williams Gunnison, army topographical engineer in charge of surveying a route to the West for the Pacific Railroad, was born in New Hampshire and graduated from West Point in 1835. He served as ordnance officer in the Seminole War in Florida and in making surveys in Georgia. After further surveying work in the Wisconsin Territory, he was assigned to Captain Howard Stansbury's party to explore the Great Salt Lake region. La Rhett Loralzo Livingston was born in 1831 in Essex County, New York, and graduated from West Point in 1853. As a Second Lieutenant with the 3rd Artillery under Colonel Edward Jenner Steptoe, he went to California, marching from Fort Leavenworth to Salt Lake City during 1854-1855, and arriving at Fort Miller, California, in 1855. In the Civil War, he served in the Penninsular, Rappahannock, and Shenandoah campaigns. Colonel Livingston retired in 1895, and he died in Washington in 1903. ...
