Papers consist mainly of Bretschneider's subject files (1929-1964) kept while he was working independently, which contain correspondence, reports, statements and photographs and concern petroleum and mining companies, and mines and petroleum fields mainly in the Rocky Mountains. From the time period Bretschneider was working with Midwest Refining Company and Midwest Exploration Company, there are albums of photographs (1920s) of oil fields and wells, equipment and workers. There are also some biographical materials.

Papers document Dietler's career and affiliations in the early stages of the crude oil purchasing industry. The collection contains military records, newspaper clippings, periodicals, photographs, transcripts of papers presented at meetings, and memoriams. Of special note is the transcript of an interview of Dietler conducted by Paul H. Giddens in 1970, which gives Dietler's accounts of his employment by Henry M. Blackmer, a Denver oil magnate who was embroiled in the infamous Teapot Dome scandal. Also included are certificates and awards, photographs, scrapbooks, and service pins and medals.

The collection documents Downing's career in the oil industry with emphasis on the Oregon Basin Oil & Gas Corporation and the development of the Oregon Basin, the Reiter Foster Oil Corporation, and the Interstate Oil Compact Commission. The bulk (about 140 cubic ft.) consists of alphabetic subject files (1920s-1950s) containing correspondence, meeting minutes, reports, leases, abstracts. and legal agreements. Numerous files are included on the Oregon Basin, Reiter Foster, the IOCC, the IPAA and API, the Colorado state legislature, and many other corporations and individuals. Also included are Downing's business correspondence files (about 30 cubic ft.) for 1919-1951, including correspondence with his son, Richard (1898- ). There are also oil well logs (1920s-1930s) of the Midwest Refining Company for wells in many states, and corporate minutes (1893-1941) for the Surety Investment Company.

Sickler, Jack M. San Juan Basin petro-geological research collection, 1920-1948.

Title: San Juan Basin petro-geological research collection, 1920-1948.

The San Juan Basin Petro-Geological Research Collection contains documents related to the exploration for oil and gas in northwestern New Mexico. Central to the collection is a type-written report describing the geological make-up and preliminary assessments of the possibility of productive oil and gas wells in an area known geologically as the San Juan Basin. This report, called "Report on Northwest New Mexico and Adjacent Areas of Arizona, Utah, and Colorado" (1920), researched and written by Jack Sickler and A.B. Beall, Jr., details likely locations for new oil wells for the Midwest Refining Company. The report includes several geological maps showing the stratigraphy of two prominent dome formations in the area. A detailed physical geography and surveyed lot map of Rio Arriba County, New Mexico is also included. All maps are located in the oversize folder. Other paper work in the collection includes correspondence between geologist Jack Sickler and land assessment offices in Gallup and Santa Fe, New Mexico (1948). There are blank copies of lease agreements, receipts for monies paid on oil and gas leases (1948), hand drawn sketch maps and stratigraphic cross-sections of the Defiance Anticline (1948, by Harry Feder), an unlabeled township survey grids, and two photographs of landscape features marked by hand with geological information.
