Albertus Christiaan Van Raalte attended the University of Leyden, deciding in 1833 to study for the ministry. In 1836 he became a minister in the Church of the Seceders when he was denied entry into the ministry of the state church. In that same year he married Christina De Moen. Because of the persecution he and his followers experienced, Van Raalte decided to immigrate to America. In 1846 Van Raalte, along with his family and 53 members of his congregation, set sail aboard the Southerner for New York.
After much deliberation and prayer, Van Raalte decided to settle in the area at the head of Black Lake, the present site of Holland, Michigan. He served as the spiritual and political leader of the colony and was also instrumental in the founding of Hope College.

Visscher, Geesje (Vander Haar). Diary of our Grandmother, 1869-1901.
Title:
Diary of our Grandmother, 1869-1901.
Included here is a poor quality photocopy of the diary of Mrs. Visscher, written in Dutch, and a typed copy translated into English. An outline of events in the diary is also included. The diary documents her youth and religious experiences and beliefs in the Netherlands, as well as her marriage and births of their first three children. The family then left for what became Holland (Mich.) with Rev. Van Raalte and other Separatists in 1845-1846. The diary then relates the births, marriages, deaths, and burials of other family, friends, and community members, fires, ministers, anniversaries, trips to Chicago, the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, and the Netherlands, the deaths of Pres. Garfield and Rev. and Mrs. Van Raalte, celebrating Thanksgiving in 1877 and Columbus Day in 1892, the crowing of Queen Wilhemina in 1898, and other local events.
