Hekhuis graduated from Hope College in 1913 and from Western Theological Seminary in 1916. He was licensed and ordained a minister by the Reformed Church in America in 1916. Albertus Christiaan Van Raalte attended the University of Leyden, deciding in 1833 to study for the ministry. In 1836 he became a minister in the Church of the Seceders when he was denied entry into the ministry of the state church. In that same year he married Christina De Moen.
