Bagby, Arthur P. (Arthur Pendleton), 1794-1858. Letters, 1842-1849.
Title:
Letters, 1842-1849.
This collection is largely composed of letters from Bagby to his wife Ann. One was written from Washington D.C. while he was beginning his service in the U.S. Senate and the rest were written after his appointment as minister plenipotentiary to Russia. One was written from London before Bagby left for Russia and the remainder were written from St. Petersburg. They include political commentary on contemporary affairs in Alabama, the U.S., and Europe. They also relate Bagby's rather frank opinions on social customs in England, Russia, and the rest of Europe. This collection also contains one letter from Ann to Bagby while he was in St. Petersburg. All of the letters have been transcribed and copies of the transcriptions are included with the collection.

Title:
Reward files, 1838-1841.
The governor is the chief executive of the state whose function is to administer the laws of the state. One of the activities used to accomplish this function is the rewarding of monetary prizes for the apprehension of persons charged with any capital offense who have escaped from prison, custody, or who have fled the state. This series consists of correspondence, affidavits, and petitions concerning rewards offered by the governor of Alabama for the apprehension of criminals. Most of the letters were written by law officers or citizens asking that a reward be offered for a particular individual. The records contain details of the crime and a detailed description of the fugitive. The most outstanding incident in this series concerns the ambush and shooting of Alexander G. Nathaniel, Graves W. Steele, and William S. Collins as they journeyed to the Marshall Co. Courthouse in March 1838. The men were attacked by Daniel S. Dickinson, Jesse Allen, Alexander McFarlane, and Arthur McFarlane. Other prominent incidents include the murder of Daniel Kendrick by William Ruff in Sumter Co., Nov. 1839; and the murder of Thomas Theadford of Greene Co. by John L. Newsom on 1841 May 6.

Blount, Richard A. (Richard Augustus), 1774-1849. Papers, 1792-1861.
Title:
Papers, 1792-1861.
This collection consists of personal, business, and political correspondence, legal records, journals, documents relating to civic appointments, and religious materials. The correspondence includes letters to and from Blount's daughter, Mary Ann, and from Bolling Hall, G. M. Troup and others discussing political events, elections, legal matters, party politics and Constitutional interpretation. The collection also contains several deeds showing that Blount added to his plantation in the 1840s and pursued a land claim in Virginia for the Revolutionary War service of his wife's uncle, David Edmunds. Blount's estate records include listings of 39 slaves with name, age, and price, and of livestock and equipment sales. Also included in the papers are ledgers and reports of the Oconee Navigation Association (1820-1830), on which Blount served as a commissioner and treasurer. Of particular note is Blount's personal diary (1794-1797) which gives insight into life, family, and education of the time. Blount travelled extensively and left detailed accounts. Similarly, his journal of the Georgia-Alabama Boundary Survey provides a first hand look at the country, Cherokee Indians, and survey problems. In addition these papers contain copies of letters between Governors A. P. Bagby of Alabama and G. M. Troup of Georgia discussing the project. Among the journals is also an album belonging to Mary Blount written ca.1834-1848 containing poetry, inscriptions, quotations, and commentary on religion, law and education. The religious records include sermons, prayers, and notes, and a cloth covered booklet of religious writings. Also present are extracts of the diary of Bishop Francis Asbury (Methodist Episcopal Church) and a copy of a letter from John Wesley to Asbury (1788); the minutes of the Fourth Annual Methodist Protestant Church General Conference (1834); and a document ordaining Blount as an Elder in 1839. The collection is accompanied by handwritten processing transcripts and typescripts that duplicate most of the documents.

Bagby's administration are records relating to appointments of examiners for the state banks, the appointment of an agent to receive and dispose of slaves that were seized due to their illegal entry into the state, and the appointment of Joseph E. Caro to translate the Spanish and French records located in the Mobile County Clerk's office.

Alabama. Governor (1837-1841 : Bagby). Militia files, 1837-1841.
Title:
Militia files, 1837-1841.
The Governor is the chief executive of the state whose function is to administer the laws of the state. One of the activities used to accomplish this function is the administering of decisions and actions relating to military affairs and the maintenance of the state Militia. This series contains letters, petitions, reports, and military orders relating to the militia and military affairs. Topics often discussed include equipment and supplies, ordnances, formation of companies, election of officers, and troop movements. Of specific interest are letters pertaining to the Creek and Cherokee Indian problems. There is considerable correspondence regarding the call for men to report to Bellefonte in Jackson County to assist with the removal of the Cherokees, including letters from General Winfield Scott and Colonel William Lindsay, the commander-in-chief of the Army of the Cherokee Nation. In a letter dated 1838 February 23, Lindsay specifically requests assistance from militia companies formed outside the Cherokee Nation. Correspondence regarding the Creek raids in south Alabama is also prominent in the series. This material includes letters about the Creek Indian uprising in Dale and Covington counties in the fall of 1837 as well as uprisings near Irwinton in Barbour County. Several of these letters were written by John P. Booth of Irwinton, including one dated 1841 May 26 in which he discusses a 12-year-old Creek Indian girl living with the Booth family. In addition there is considerable general correspondence between Bagby and James G. Carroll, the Adjutant Inspector General, regarding the affairs of the state militia. Although reference is made to numerous militia companies, the Mobile Rifle Company and the Montgomery True Blues are mentioned frequently. The Mount Vernon Arsenal is cited frequently throughout the series as well.

Alabama. Governor (1847-1849 : Chapman). Administrative files, 1847-1849.
Title:
Administrative files, 1847-1849.
The governor is the chief executive of the state whose function is to administer the laws of the state. One of the activities used to accomplish this function is the administering of executive decisions and actions. This series consists of letters, petitions, reports, and circulars that contain information concerning major administrative decisions of Gov. Reuben Chapam as well as routine affairs. The majority of the correspondence deals with financial issues, particularly the negotiations with the U.S. government regarding funds due the state of Alabama from public land sales. Soon after he took office Chapman appointed Montgomery lawyer, Jefferson F. Jackson, as an agent to Washington, D.C., to audit and settle accounts with the federal government regarding the land sale receipts. Robert T. Scott of Jackson County was eventually recruited to assist with the audits. There is considerable correspondence with these two men as well as with Alabama's U.S. Congressmen: Arthur P. Bagby, John Gayle, George S. Houston, and S. W. Inge. F. S. Lyon, State Comptroller Joel Riggs, and Attorney General M. A. Baldwin also corresponded with Chapman regarding state finances. The series also includes petitions and circulars regarding the construction of various roads and railway networks both in the state and nationally; correspondence with Florida officials regarding the boundary between Florida and Alabama; documents signed by Daniel Pratt about moving the state capital to Montgomery; a letter and petition from the U.S. National Medical Association urging all states to adopt a system for recording births, deaths, and marriages; and a petition from some Mobile citizens protesting the passage of a bill requiring that black ship crews be confined in jail while their vessel was docked in the Port of Mobile. Other prominent correspondents include: James Chesney, who was appointed to procure maps of Alabama as required by the state revenue bill; William Garrett, and Chapman's two private secretaries, Elmore J. Fitzpatrick and Thomas Harrison. Fitzpatrick served as Chapman's secretary until he resigned in 1848 November. Harrison then took over for the remainder of Chapman's administration. Chapman apparently spent little of his two-year term in Montgomery. The majority of the correspondence from Fitzpatrick and Harrison consists of their apprising Chapman of the correspondence they were forwarding to him at his home in Huntsville, additional information regarding the correspondents, and descriptions of life, the weather, and politics in Montgomery. Much of the correspondence that was forwarded to Chapman contains notations on the back regarding his response. This series also contains a set of typed transcripts that were transcribed from the original letter book containing Chapman's answers to some of his correspondence. This letter book (SG 5685) is part of another series of governors' records in the ADAH holdings: Alabama Governors, Correspondence.

Extraditions and requisitions files, 1837-1841.
The Governor is the chief executive of the state whose function is to administer the laws of the state. One of the activities used to accomplish this function is the extraditing of criminals. This process may also be referred to as requisition and involves either a request from the Governor of Alabama for the return of criminials who have escaped to other states or a request to the Governor of Alabama for the extradition of criminals found in Alabama. This series consists of correspondence, petitions, and legal documents. Most of the items give details of the crime, the criminal, and the circumstances of the extradition/requisition request. The crimes committed by the felons included theft, murder, horse stealing, assault, forgery, and stealing slaves. Some of the more prominent cases include an appeal for the return of slave who escaped from Benjamin H. Rutherford of Macon Co. and was later discovered in Georgia; a request for the extradition of John Petty from a jail in Kentucky back to Huntsville, Ala. to stand trial for stealing a slave owned by Robert Lanford; and the case of Solomon White, an escapee from the Autauga Co. jail, who was being held in the Natchez, Miss. jail.

Alabama. Governor (1837-1841 : Bagby). Administrative files, 1829-1841.
Title:
Administrative files, 1829-1841.
The Governor is the chief executive of the state whose function is to administer the laws of the state. One of the activities used to accomplish this function is the administering of executive decisions and actions. This series consists of the administrative files of Governor Arthur P. Bagby and contains correspondence, reports, petitions, copies of laws and resolutions, and circulars. Much of the series deals with the state's economic climate, especially the status of the State Banks, and politics in general. The presidential election of 1840, Bagby's reelection in 1839, and the abolition movement figure prominently in much of the political correspondence. Other prominent topics include the vulnerability of the Mt. Vernon Arsenal, improvement of navigation on the Tombigbee River, construction of the state penitentiary at Wetumpka (1839-1841), and various functions and activities at the University of Alabama. At a more specific level, the series contains an 1840 petition from citizens of Escambia County in West Florida requesting annexation to the state of Alabama; petitions and correspondence concerning the passage of a National Bankrupt Law; a letter about sixteenth section land transactions dated 1841; an argument delivered on 1838 March 1 before the state supreme court about dueling; correspondence from Joseph E. Caro regarding the translation of Spanish and French documents in the Mobile County Clerk's office; and correspondence and circulars from Aaron H. Palmer, Director of the American and Foreign Agency, promoting the agency and soliciting to represent the state of Alabama in its European business transactions. Among the correspondents are national figures such as William H. Seward and Daniel Webster, and state figures such as Clement Comer Clay; William R. King; William R. Hallett, a prominent Mobile banker who advised Bagby on economic and political issues; and Basil Manley, the second president of the University of Alabama. Other correspondents include: J.G. Lyon, William B. Norris, William Hale, William Thaddeus Sanford, Reuben Saffold, T.L. Toulmin, and John B. Hogan. Because a large number of Bagby's correspondents resided in Mobile, the affairs of this community are discussed frequently.
