This collection is largely composed of letters from Bagby to his wife Ann. One was written from Washington D.C. while he was beginning his service in the U.S. Senate and the rest were written after his appointment as minister plenipotentiary to Russia. One was written from London before Bagby left for Russia and the remainder were written from St. Petersburg. They include political commentary on contemporary affairs in Alabama, the U.S., and Europe. They also relate Bagby's rather frank opinions on social customs in England, Russia, and the rest of Europe. This collection also contains one letter from Ann to Bagby while he was in St. Petersburg. All of the letters have been transcribed and copies of the transcriptions are included with the collection.
