Reward files, 1838-1841.

The governor is the chief executive of the state whose function is to administer the laws of the state. One of the activities used to accomplish this function is the rewarding of monetary prizes for the apprehension of persons charged with any capital offense who have escaped from prison, custody, or who have fled the state. This series consists of correspondence, affidavits, and petitions concerning rewards offered by the governor of Alabama for the apprehension of criminals. Most of the letters were written by law officers or citizens asking that a reward be offered for a particular individual. The records contain details of the crime and a detailed description of the fugitive. The most outstanding incident in this series concerns the ambush and shooting of Alexander G. Nathaniel, Graves W. Steele, and William S. Collins as they journeyed to the Marshall Co. Courthouse in March 1838. The men were attacked by Daniel S. Dickinson, Jesse Allen, Alexander McFarlane, and Arthur McFarlane. Other prominent incidents include the murder of Daniel Kendrick by William Ruff in Sumter Co., Nov. 1839; and the murder of Thomas Theadford of Greene Co. by John L. Newsom on 1841 May 6.
