Title:
New York Times Company records. Arthur Hays Sulzberger papers 1823-1999
Arthur Hays Sulzberger was the publisher of xxThe New York Timesxx from 1935 until 1961 and chairman of the board of The New York Times Company from 1961 until 1968. While he was publisher, circulation of The Times almost doubled; the editorial page developed a reputation for strong opinions; news events were subjected to more analysis and coverage of specialized topics was strengthened; new sections and departments were created for food, fashion, and women; and the overall style of the paper became less rigid and more aesthetically pleasing. The papers document Sulzberger's life and career at xxThe New York Timesxx, with the majority of the collection relating to Sulzberger's 26 years as president and publisher of the paper. Included in the collection are correspondence with family members, friends, colleagues, world leaders, and other dignitaries; memoranda regarding the business of the newspaper, including Sulzberger's notes of praise and criticism to his editors, managers, and writers; reports on his meetings with world leaders, including Winston Churchill, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Harry S. Truman; and photographs of Sulzberger, his family, business trips, vacations, and The Times' buildings.

Title:
Baltimore News American collection
The "Baltimore News American" was a major daily newspaper printed under various titles and multiple forms for over 200 years. The highlights of the collection are the over one million photographic print and negative images, dating roughly from 1904 to 1986, along with the 1900 microfilm reels of newspaper content, covering a view of Baltimore and Maryland from 1799 to 1920 and 1946 to 1986. The collection encompasses images of many aspects of the human experience--people, places, and events that occurred in the city of Baltimore, the state of Maryland, and the world--as well as administrative files, one-off publications, ephemera, maps, and memorabilia, detailing the history of the newspaper and its predecessors.

Title:
A.J. Liebling collection, 1920-1963.
Manuscripts, correspondence, galley proofs, printed articles, newspaper clippings, photographs, documents, and a few tapes and films, spanning Liebling's entire career as a journalist. The collection consists largely of typewritten drafts for hundreds of articles Liebling wrote for the New Yorker magazine, with his extensive autograph corrections, including his articles for the columns "Talk of the Town," "Our Far-Flung Correspondents," "A Reporter at Large," "Profiles," "The Wayward Press," "Fiction and Talk," "Letters From Paris" (1939-1944), "Normandy Revisited," and "Comment," as well as miscellaneous untitled articles. Also included are notes and drafts for his books The Press, Between Meals, The Honest Rainmaker, and The Pigs of St. Lô, as well as book reviews and stories he published in the New Yorker. The "Letters From Paris" articles give a firsthand account of life in Paris during World War II, mainly from 1939-1940, while "The Wayward Press" comments, often critically, on the practices of American journalism, especially in the Hearst and the McCormick newspapers. Also included are extensive notes and drafts for a book on Henry Luce and the Time empire which Liebling never published. Correspondence includes letters from Liebling to his parents, Joseph and Anna Liebling, describing his life as a student at Dartmouth and at the Sorbonne in the early 1920's, and later letters to them which describe Paris before the Nazi occupation and London during the blitz. Other correspondents include Liebling's first wife, Ann (Beatrice McGinn) Liebling, and Jean Stafford, who became his third wife.
