Clayton, H. D. (Henry DeLamar), 1827-1889. Civil War maps of Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee, [ca.1862]-[ca.1864].
Title:
Civil War maps of Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee, [ca.1862]-[ca.1864].
Maps, 1862-1864, used in Clayton's operations in Ala., Tenn., and Ga. Some of them are designated as being products of the cavalry corps and bear the signatures of J. S. Tyner and John M. Stewart, the engineers who drew them. Two of the maps were originally created for Major General Will T. Martin who led a cavalry division under Joe Wheeler. Those particular maps are marked as belonging to him. The majority of the maps are of Ga., with four of them depicting the Atlanta-Stone Mountain vicinity and the surrounding countryside. Twelve of them are of northwest Ga., depicting an area that extends from Marietta on northward to Dalton and Rossville. Three of the maps are of Tenn., and show an area that includes Nashville, Murfreesboro, Chattanooga, and the terrain between these communities. One depicts the area where Tenn.,Ala., and Ga. meet. The collection includes only one map of Ala., and it is limited to the vicinity around Florence. Although four of the maps state no scale, the rest of them range from 1" = 1 mile to 1" = 12 miles. The maps are very detailed, showing rivers, creeks, roads, railroads, bridges, post offices, mills, smithies, distilleries, churches, residences, camp locations, and other landmarks. Many of the maps have notations about mileage and the condition of the terrain. All but one of the maps are color coded to designate waterways, main thoroughfares, smaller community roads, and in some instances, railroads.
