H. D. Clayton was instrumental in organizing the 39th Ala. infantry regiment in 1862 May. He was elected colonel of the regiment and commanded it in Kentucky and Murfreesboro. He was made brigadier general 1863 Apr. 25 and commanded troops at Chickamauga, Rocky Face Mountain, Nashville, New Hope, and other campaigns in Tenn. His troops covered the Confederate retreat from Tenn. to Ga., where they then fought in the Dalton-Atlanta campaign. On 1864 July 7 Clayton was appointed major general. In 1865 Mar. 19 and 21 his troops fought their last skirmishes at Bentonville, N. C.
