George Weedon was born in late 1734 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. Weedon was appointed an ensign in the Virginia militia during the French and Indian War and rose to the rank of lieutenant in 1757 and to the rank of captain lieutenant in 1762. After the war, he moved to Fredericksburg, Virginia, and married Catharine Gordon (d. 1797). He operated a tavern in Fredericksburg. Weedon was appointed a lieutenant colonel in the 3rd Virginia Regiment in January 1776 and received a commission in the continental army 13 February 1776. He was promoted to colonel in June 1776. In August 1776, he and his troops joined the continental army in New York. Appointed a brigadier general 21 February 1777, Weedon served with the army until retiring because of a dispute in rank and for his health. He was recalled to active duty in 1780 to organize and command troops in Virginia. He served at the siege of Yorktown, Virginia. After the war, Weedon returned to Fredericksburg and operated his tavern. Active in local politics, he served on Fredericksburg's council and as its mayor. Weedon died 23 December 1793 in Fredericksburg.
Virginia Brigadier General, innkeeper, friend of Washington.
Army officer.
Innkeeper and merchant, of Fredericksburg, Va.; officer in United States Continental Army.
A veteran of the French and Indian War and associate of George Washington, the Virginian George Weedon became an ardent proponent to the revolutionary cause. Elected colonel of the 3rd Virginia Regiment on August 13, 1776, Weedon served under Washington's command in New York and in the vicinity of Philadelphia, earning election to Brigadier General on February 21, 1777. He retired from the army, however, early in 1778 when his rival, William Woodford, was given seniority over him at Valley Forge. Weedon later returned to duty with the Virginia Militia, acquitting himself well during the Virginia Campaign of 1781.
Revolutionary War officer.
George Weedon was a brigadier general in the Continental Army.
Weeden was an officer in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.
General in the Continental Army.
Brigadier General George Weedon was a member of the Continental Army in the Revolutionary War.
George Weedon (1734-1793) ran a tavern in his native Fredericksburg, Virginia before and after the revolutionary war. Enlisting as a Lt. Colonel in the 3rd Virginia regiment in 1776, he advanced to Brigadier General by 1777 seeking action at Brandywine and Germantown. He resigned or was furloughed in 1777 after being Adjutant General of the U.S. Army. He was recalled to duty in 1780 and commanded the Virginia Militia at Yorktown. See the ENCYCLOPEDIA OF AMERICAN BIOGRAPHY 12:313.
George Weedon (1734-1793) was Captain in the French and Indian War and a General in the American Revolutionary War. Between the two conflicts he was a prominent citizen of Fredericksburg, Virginia, operating a tavern in that city which served as a meeting place for George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, John Marshall and others to discuss politics and the future course of the American colonies.
Weedon was born in 1734, a few months after his father’s death, in Westmoreland County in Virginia. His widowed mother married William Strother when Weedon was still very young, and the family moved to Stafford County, Virginia. Weedon’s first military experience came with the onset of the French and Indian War. He served as a Captain in the Virginia Militia, having been commissioned an officer after recruiting other soldiers.
After the war Weedon married Catherin Gordon and settled in Fredericksburg. Catherine’s father, John Gordon, operated a tavern in the city, and when he died Catherine’s mother continued to run it under as Mrs. Gordon’s Tavern. After Weedon’s marriage to Catherin, he took over operations of the tavern, under the name Weedon’s Tavern. The tavern served as post office for Fredericksburg and the surrounding area. As proprietor, Weedon became a prominent citizen of the city. He kept a stable with pure-bred horses for the amusement of visiting gentlemen, was an ardent sportsman and became secretary of the Jockey Club.
The tavern also became a meeting place for future leaders of the American Revolution, including Washington, Jefferson, Marshall, Patrick Henry, and many others. Weedon, by all accounts, was sympathetic to the cause of revolution from an early stage, and when the war started, he abandoned the tavern to join the army. Weedon has a distinguished military career during the war, and commanded the Virginia Militia at Gloucester Point during the Siege of Yorktown. He was present at the surrender of Lord Cornwallis in 1781. The Peace Ball, which was held in Fredericksburg to celebrate the victory at Yorktown, was held at Weedon’s Tavern and was attended by a large number of people, including Washing and Lafayette.
After the war Weedon served as Mayor of Fredericksburg, 1785-1786, and as the first President of the Society of the Cincinnati in the State of Virginia. Weedon eventually retired to his country estate outside of town.
George Weedon died two days before Christmas in 1793.

Papers of the Cocke Family 1776-1963 (1810-1929).
The papers consist almost entirely of family correspondence and financial accounts. Speeches and addresses, recipe books, sketch books, poetry books, photographs, scrap books, newsclippings, religious newsletters and genealogical information are also included. Of special interest are an early autograph collection of Revolutionary War figures, a Bremo Recess plantation ledger, 1853-1870, kept by Arthur Lee Brent and a selection of Biblical texts and expositions on slavery. Topics discussed include immigration in the late 19th-century, the rebuilding of the Rotunda, the publication of the Bedford, Va. Index, and local Virginia politics and finances, but for the most part the letters detail life at Bremo Recess and various cities where family members located, particularly Washington D.C., Wilmington, Delaware, and St. John, Nova Scotia. Over three dozen members of the Brent, Cocke, Cabell, and Campbell families are represented by at least one letter.

Greene, Nathanael, 1742-1786. Papers, 1777-1780
Title:
Nathanael Greene Papers 1777-1780
Nathanael Greene was one of the leading commanders in the Continental Army, and the only officer George Washington saw as capable of leading in his absence. Greene served as a field commander, member of Washington's staff, Quartermaster General, and commander of the Army in the Southern Theater. Greene was born on July 27, 1742 in Potowomut, Rhode Island to a Quaker family, who believed that their children would learn more from manual labor then from attending school. Lacking a formal education Greene was very intelligent and taught himself to read, developing early on a love of books - particularly military history and theory. It was through reading, not experience, where Greene learned his knowledge of military science. Between 1778 and 1780 he reluctantly served as Quartermaster General, and was able to drastically improve supplying the Continental Army. Greene ended his military career leading the American Southern army to victory over the British. Greene died in Georgia in June 1786. The Papers of Nathanael Greene come from Greene's tenure as Quartermaster General of the Continental Army between 1778 and 1780. The collection primarily consists of Greene's correspondence with officers in the quartermaster department, officers in the Army (including George Washington), and members of the Continental Congress; relating to the operation of the Quartermaster Department with requests for supplies, forage, and money. In addition, there is also correspondence between officers of the Quartermaster Department. The content of the letters provide a detailed account of the logistical obstacles that Greene and his subordinates faced in trying to keep not only the Quartermaster Department but the Continental Army running. The papers do not contain any material relating to Greene's military service or private life either before or after his tenure as quartermaster general.

Ledger, 1771-1775 : Fredericksburg, Virginia.
General Hugh Mercer, who settled at Fredericksburg, Va. after serving on Braddock's Expedition and becoming a friend of George Washington, was killed at the battle of Princeton in 1777. In 1771 he became the partner of Dr. Ewen Clements and they opened a shop for drugs and medicines. By 1772, John Julian had become Mercer's partner. The ledger kept during the years of partnership with Clements and Julian in Fredericksburg and ends before Mercer entered upon a military career in 1775. About 315 Virginia families were attended by Mercer, who notes visits and prescriptions, as well as fees charged. Among his patients were Mary Ball Washington, the mother of George Washington; Charles Washington, his younger brother; Col. Fielding Lewis; James Madison; Col. Thomas Ludwell Lee; John, Henry, and William Fitzhugh; Col. John Thornton; Dr. John Brockenbrough; Mercer's brother-in-law, Capt. George Weedon; and James Taylor Page and Mann Page. The entries center in 1771 and 1772, with notations on a division of each account between Dr. Clements and Dr. Mercer. At the end of 1772, the ledger gives an idea of the

Richard Henry Lee Papers, 1763-1823
Title:
Richard Henry Lee Papers 1763-1823
A politician and arch revolutionary, Richard Henry Lee was an impassioned supporter of American independence from the mid-1760s. Born into one of the most prominent families in the colony on January 20, 1732, Lee was bred to a political life, serving in the Virginia House of Burgesses during the Stamp Act and Non-importation crises, helping convey his state into the revolutionary camp. As a delegate to the Continental Congress, Lee was the first to officially move that a declaration of independence be drafted, and he ended his public career as a principled opponent of ratification of the Constitution and as Virginia's first U.S. Senator. He died at home in Virginia in June 1794. A small, but highly valuable collection, the papers of Richard Henry Lee document the political life and activities of one of the most ardent revolutionaries in Virginia. The 0.5 linear feet of letters (193 items), most addressed to Lee, are an important resource for study of pre-Revolutionary political agitation in Virginia, the increasing connections forged between the colonies, and the political course of the war. To a lesser degree the collection documents Lee's late-life anti-federalism. Among the major correspondents are Lee's brothers Arthur and William, and such leaders in the revolutionary cause as George Washington, Samuel Adams, Charles Lee, John Adams, and Thomas Paine.

Papers, 1776-1795. Most of the material dates from 1776-1783, when Stewart served as aide to General Horatio Gates and was a colonel in the 13th Pennsylvania Regiment. There are a few musters and returns of inspection, but most of the papers consist of letters to and from Stewart. Many of them are concerned with military business, especially his efforts to get cannon and ordnance for the Northern Army early in the war, but there are also some personal letters, including several from his sister, Martha Boyd, giving him news of family and friends in Ireland. Two letters deal with his attempts to get James Murray, a cousin who was a lieutenant in the British Army, included in an exchange of prisoners. The collection includes letters from John Trumbull, Joseph Brown, George Weedon, Benjamin Bartlett, Anthony Wayne, William Alexander (Lord Stirling), Horatio Gates, and others.

Nelson family. Papers of the Nelson family [manuscript], 1739-1837.
Title:
Papers of the Nelson family [manuscript], 1739-1837.
This microfilm collection contributed by various libraries and historical societies contains papers of the descendents of Thomas (Scotch Tom) Nelson who emigrated from Penrith, England, to Yorktown, Va., in the 1700s. The papers are mainly those by Thomas's son William (1711-1772) and William's son Thomas (1738-1789), though papers by other Nelson family members are also included. In addition to their duties of running a plantation, both Nelsons served the state of Virginia in many ways, William as president of the council and governor (1770-71) and Thomas as delegate to the Continental Congress (1775) where he signed the Declaration of Independence, commander of troops in the American Revolution, and governor (June-Nov. 1781). The collection reflects these roles, consisting primarily of legal documents (wills, deeds, etc.) and letters concerning business or political affairs. Papers from the Duke University Library include the indenture (1739) of a Thomas Nelson, a deed (1771) and will (1772) of William Nelson, a handwritten biographical sketch (11 p.) about Thomas Nelson (1738-1789) written by his grandson Thomas Jefferson Page, and a revolutionary war letter (1781) of Thomas's. Papers from the New York Public Library include a letter (1752) of William's concerning a financial agreement and a petition (1772) to Virginia Governor Dunmore written by Patrick Henry and co-signed by William and Thomas Nelson. Also included are ten letters (1776-1786) of Thomas's which recount proceedings of the Continental Congress, itemize for the state his travel expenses 1775-1777, ask for a full account of the counties' arms and military stores, and inform various generals about the movement of British troops and the availability of men and supplies. Papers from the American Philosophical Society, Philadelphia, include Thomas's American Revolution letters (1777-1781) to and from General George Weedon. Papers from the Harvard College Library cover a wide range of topics and include a letter (1791) from Thomas Jefferson which mentions a box of books contributed by William Nelson for "public use," a list (1774) of donations from Virginia for relief of the city of Boston, letters to and from Thomas Nelson (1781, 1788), and correspondence (1837) between the Page family and Samuel Smith regarding payment to Thomas's ancestors for money he loaned the state during the revolution. Papers from the University of Michigan include letters (1771) from William Nelson to an unnamed British army officer in New York concerning Virginia recruitment efforts. Also included are Thomas Nelson's letters (1781) to and from General Nathanael Greene and a letter (1781) congratulating him on his appointment as governor signed by prominent Virginians, including Edmund Randolph. Thomas Nelson's papers from the New York Historical Society include a letter (1776) concerning his appointment to a Board of War and a frantic group of twenty letters (Jan.-Feb. 1781) written to various generals in the midst of a British invasion of Virginia. Also included are letter (June- Aug. 1781) addressed to him as governor from the Marquis de Lafayette concerning provisions for Virginia's troops. Papers from the Historical Society of Pennsylvania include William Nelson's letter (1748) concerning the ethics of a particular financial arrangement and a letter (1771) written while governor concerning a liquor trade agreement with the Indians. Also included are two letters (1777, 1779) of Lt. Col. William Nelson.

Most of the items are dated during 1779-1781, when Steuben was involved in efforts to reorganize the Continental Army and commanded the forces in Virginia, attempting to make that state a base of supply for General Nathanael Greene's army. They relate to such matters s the preparation and distribution of his "Regulations," reactions and questions about this work, appointments of inspectors, supply needs and problems, organization and administration of army and militia units, enemy movements and strength, condition of state militia and other army units, British invasion of Virginia, problems with the Virginia militia, his lands in Virginia, founding of the Society of the Cincinnati, etc. Some of his more frequent correspondents were: Col. Jean Baptiste Ternant, Col. William Davies, the Board of War, M. de Franey, Chevalier de la Luzerne, Gen. Nathanael Greene, Gov. Thomas Jefferson, Col. Edward Carrington, Col. George Gibson, Gen. Thomas Nelson, Gen. George Weedon, Gen. Peter Muhlenberg, Louis de Pontiere, Gen. Robert Lawson, Gen. Isaac Gregory, Col. J. Junis, Gen. Mordecai Gist, Maj. Buller Claiborne, Capt. John Pryor, Capt. William North, Col. Benjamin Walker, and Gen. Benjamin Lincoln. The collection also contains lists of engineers and tradesmen, returns of various regiments, returns of supplies, reports of Congress, and other miscellaneous papers.

Alexander, William, 1726-1783. Selected papers, 1767-1782. 1776-1782 (bulk).
Title:
Selected papers, 1767-1782. 1776-1782 (bulk).
These selected papers of William Alexander, spanning the years 1767 to 1782 (with a gap between late December 1779 to June 1781), consist of correspondence sent and received, military orders and reports, and bulletins to the Continental Congress. The earliest documents relate Lord Stirling's early commercial dealings, but the bulk of the papers chronicle his activities during the American Revolution. Alexander's baptism by fire emerges from the records of numerous campaigns and conflicts; the Battles of Long Island and Trenton in 1776, and of Brandywine the following year are well documented. Also covered in the Alexander Papers are civil and military affairs in New Jersey; military intelligence and troop movements in New Jersey and the Hudson Highlands; communication with enemy forces; and various matters of army administration. Alexander's frontier command is particularly well documented. Notable correspondents include the most of the military and political leaders of the new state and national governments, as well as prominent merchants in New York and New Jersey. Exemplifying the caliber of the material is a report dated June 12, 1781, from General Washington to a board of general officers at New Windsor. In this signed document, Washington outlines plans for a Franco-American assault on New York and requests advice on seven specific points from his officer corps. Items have each been inlaid into two folio volumes. The papers are extensively described in Sotheby's catalog "The Library of H. Bradley Martin, Highly Important Printed and Manuscript Americana: Auction Wednesday, January 31, 1990" (Lots 2506-2553) and are available to researchers on microfilm. Additional manuscripts relating to William Alexander can be found in the extensive Alexander Papers and the Rutherfurd Papers as well as in other gatherings of William Alexander's own correspondence, in The New-York Historical Society Manuscripts Department.

Rosengarten's The German allied troops in the North American war of independence, 1776-1783 (Albany, NY: Joel Munsell's Sons, 1893), a translation and abridgement of Max von Eelking's 2-volume work: Die deutschen Hülfstruppen im nordamerikanischen Befreiungskriege, 1776 bis 1783 (Hannover: Helwing, 1863); Rosengarten's work is based on both volumes of the original, but the title page erroneously states: Vol. I. The volume contains a total of 18 original documents dated 1767 to 1893; 74 portraits of 57 different subjects, including one of Rosengarten; 7 maps; and 25 other illustrations, including 2 in color (leaves following p. 162, 254).
