Contains information pertaining to the following wars and time periods: Early Indian, Civil War, Late Indian, World War I. Contains information pertaining to the following military units and organizations: United States (U.S.) Cavalry Regiments (1st, 3rd, 4th, 7th, 8th), U.S. Infantry Regiments (5th, 9th, 20th, 21st). General description of the collection: The Order of Indian Wars papers include organizational and membership files of organization of veterans of the U.S. Army's campaigns against Native Americans on the advancing frontier. Administrative papers include membership applications and published OIW proceedings and various historical materials assembled by the membership covering activities against Native American tribes from the Tippecanoe Campaign to the closing of the frontier. Topical materials are in an alphabetical arrangement, with numbers ascribed to each file. They include booklets, pamphlets, speeches, newspaper clippings, typescripts and originals of letters, memoirs of military and civilian personalities, and photocopies of articles from newspapers and journals including "Winners of the West", "Sunshine Magazine", "U.S. Army Recruiting News", "Blue Book", "Cavalry Journal" and "Field Artillery Journal". Event coverage includes the establishment of the Carlisle Indian School, the Anthony Wayne Campaign (1792-94), Powder River Expeditions (1865 & 1876), Sioux Wars, Rosebud Campaign, Yellowstone Expedition, and the Little Big Horn (1876), Bannock War (1878), Sheepeater Campaign (1879), Victorio Campaign (1880) and the Ghost Dance War (1890).

Gordon, David S. (David Stuart), 1832-1930. General David Stuart Gordon papers, 1892-1925.

Title: General David Stuart Gordon papers, 1892-1925.

Papers include a letter from Gen. Gordon to Charles C. Wallcutt, Jr., Army Recorder, turning down the position of Commander of the Order of Indian Wars and suggesting that a younger person would be more appropriate (1892); various newspaper clippings, including one on Gordon's role in Gen. James Lane's Frontier Guard (1906); letters to Gordon with remembrances of and requests for information about the Lane Guards and Indian Wars (1907 [typewritten copy] and 1919); letters from Bell Fleming to Gen. Gordon at The Brighton (1912); and an Army War College-produced Catalogue of American Indian War Photographs, which has names and tribes of those pictured, dates, locations, and some brief biographical and historical notes (48 p.). Also included is a London Patent Office patent application letter for a claim of international rights to "Improvements in combined match-cases and cigar-tip cutters" (1909).

Contains personal and military correspondence (1870-1924) including correspondence regarding Major Carl F. McKinney; biographical material on the Swift family (n.d.); newspaper clippings on: World War I and the 308th Infantry Battalion (1919); meetings and registers of the Order of Indian Wars of the United States (1936); programs of 307th Infantry (1927-30); miscellaneous materials from the U.S. Army Transport Ship Barry (n.d.) and a report by Swift entitled: MILITARY EDUCATION OF ROBERT E. LEE, WITH SOME ComparisonS (1926?). Also includes a large scrapbook entitled MEMORY AND FELLOWSHIP BOOK presented to Katherine Swift (1910) which contains programs, pictures and memorabilia relating to her life.

Contains photographs of the following military units: 6th United States (U.S.) Cavalry Regiment; 3rd U.S. Cavalry Regiment; 4th U.S. Infantry Regiment; 10th U.S. Cavalry Regiment; 7th U.S. Cavalry Regiment; 9th U.S. Cavalry Regiment; 5th U.S. Cavalry Regiment. General description of the collection: The Order of the Indian Wars photograph collection is an incomplete amalgamation from what must have been a fantastic holding originally, according to a typescript inventory. The collection contains mostly portrait photographs of Army officers of the late Indian Wars period up to and including WWI. Also included are numerous photos of American Indians. Many of the images are not original photographs but clippings from magazines and other published sources. There is a photo of First Sergeant "Meat", his wife and daughter, an American Indian who was a soldier in the U.S. Army circa 1885. Meat is wearing the regulation issue Army uniform while his wife and daughter wear native American clothing.
